What you can notice immediately:

- Very good screen resolution

  • Light weight (just 99g)

  • Decent voice quality

  • A handy digital camera with protective shutter

  • Easy Access Buttons for Walkman

Lets get into more details:

Menu/Operating System

Within few days, you will get used to the Menu, esp. if you are a user of other branded phones. It took about a week's time for me to get used to the menu completely. Now I can navigate to any option quite easily. Its quite fast to respond as well. Ringtone volume is loud enough, so as the Vibration feel. Phone has hands-free option, which lets you to use speaker phone for your conversations (need not hold it to your ear). You have option to record a conversation too ;-). I initially looked for a "Symbian OS" however, I found it it be bit slow in response and has some potential virus attack problems. As long as I have what I want in my phone, I have told myself to ignore the name of the OS. And in that way, this phone satisfies my needs. There is one option in Symbian, which I think is cool is "Active Desktop", which lets you see your latest calendar events on your standby screen. SE has got around this feature by providing a "Notes" feature, which in turn lets you put your notes on your stand-by screen. Not bad..huh..!!

Joy Stick

I felt this needs its own section. Before I bought this Sony Ericsson phone, my main worry is, how does this Joy Stick work. I have tried other Sony phones before briefly and felt bit difficult to handle Joy Stick. However, let me tell you.. once you start using Joy stick and get used to it, you will be amazed how handy it is to use and how easy and fast it is to navigate between various options. There could be a flip side as well for this convenience. I have heard problems about Joy Stick getting struck after heavy usage. However, I have also heard that this problem can be corrected by a technician by cleaning the dust/residue formations inside. So far, in my more than a month's usage, I found no such problems. By the way, those who hate Joy Stick, SE has other similar handset W810i, without Joy Stick, but only problem with that is, it does not have a Camera Protection cover, which is the reason why I was reluctant about that model

Key Pad/Other Buttons

Keys are bit small for "Big" hands, but otherwise, they are very responsive. They are bigger compared other SE phones, so I won't complain much. Among other buttons, A dedicated camera shutter lever (to open and close camera protective cover, cam starts when you open this door), Click button (to click a pic/video), Walkman button(to start music player instantly), a Play/Pause button, dedicated Volume Up and Down buttons (which also acts as Track Up/Down button, and also as camera zoom). All in all, all these dedicated keys will help you to do your tasks faster without menus

Camera

Well, it has a 2 Mega Pixel camera on board. Just want to highlight one point here that, this particular model lacks "Auto Focus" feature that its brothers have (W810 and W800). I am not sure how much of difference this makes in a camera phone though. I have seen pics of all three phones and all are similar in clarity. One thing is for sure, Camera Phones are not replacements for the actual Digital camera. Even though they say 2Mega, it quite doesn't withstand my similar MP Digital Cam's quality. These are to be used only as "fun" picture takers. Things might change as they reveal more advanced camera phones, but this is my impression of this model at least. Make sure you also have a "Still" hand, for few more seconds after you hear a "click" because this cam takes some time to capture the image and store it and any shake anywhere will give you a "Blurred" pic. It also has in-built "Flash", which helps in pitch dark situations to capture an image, otherwise, its kind of Ok. You can also use it as Emergency Light with the help of a short cut menu feature. You can record videos and the size depends on memory you have. It has "Voice Recorder" too, you can record some nice sound and use it as Ringtone;-)

Walkman

Here's the most talked about feature on which this model is especially marketed. One simple word..."It Rocks". Very good clarity of MP3 playback. You can even play with its Equalizer modes, put it in MEGA BASS mode and you know why I am calling it as a "Rocky" phone. You can listen to WalkMan in Two Modes. One is with the headset and other is it through its in-built speaker. Either way, the clarity is superb and some say it can compare with I-Pod quality. With all the dedicated buttons we talked about earlier, this is a music player on its own. One final thing for all the reviewers, the phone has something called "Music Only" mode, in which you can turn off communication signals (basically turning off your cell phone part of it) and use it as a purely music player. This feature is helpful in air-crafts where cell phone is not allowed on-board. You can also save on battery with this feature where you want to switch off your phone and continue to enjoy music

Connectivity

Infrared Port (I have not used this so far), Bluetooth (I am using it to interact with my laptop and other Bluetooth enabled divides..and works perfectly), Physical Connectivity (thru Data Cable to your PC, I use this to synchronize my phone contacts with Microsoft Outlook contacts and exchange other media files). Data Cable is a USB cable, which opens up your Memory Stick as another logical drive on your PC and lets you cut/copy/paste files, just like any other windows drive/folders. If you have USB 2.0 on your PC, its even faster

Accessories

Don't you love it when you get everything you wanted bundled together and given to you with the phone itself? That's where SE rocks again.

Here's what you get with the package:

A head phone adapter, which has an input for connecting any ear phone/headphone (this is just a cool option for people who like their own headsets, in no way I am understating SE's ear phones though, they simply are superb, listen to believe it)

Ear Phones (one end is a 3.5mm jack, which goes into above adapter and other side two ear buds that go into your ears)

256MB "Memory Stick Pro Duo" Memory card (buy more later if you want, unlike some other phones, a higher MB/GB card does not slow down your phone. The card is hot swappable as well.

Memory Stick Pro Adapter (This looks like earlier Memory Stick Pro card, which accepts Memory Stick Pro Duo as input and lets you use it as Memory Stick Pro in capable devices..confused? drop me a note if you are..;-))

USB Data Cable (lets you connect your phone to computer and exchange files and info)

Charger (A full charge takes about 1.5 to 2 hrs and lasts upto 3/4 days with moderate usage of the features)

CD (contains the synchronization software to sync your outlook contacts, notes, tasks and calendar items, phone to pc communication drivers, Disk to Phone.. a software to convert your CD music into MP3 and stores on your phone easily)

What did I miss? - Drop me a line, I will add it here
