Every successful person has a story to tell so does bashing singer ‘Sonu Nigam’. Born to Agam Kumar Nigam, a popular stage singer in North India, on 30th July 1973, Sonu had just a single aim since his childhood –to be an established singer like his father. He was raised listening to the beat of drums, strings of violins, charisma of flutes and melodious music dancing all around in the airs of his home. He was given training by his father from age three itself. He was born in Faridabad and brought up in Delhi doing his schooling till 12th there. Many people do not know but Sonu has acted as a child artist in Kaamchor, Ustadi Ustad Se, Hum Se Hai Samana, Taqdeer and Betab. Along with his father he too started singing on stage for wedding and birthday ceremonies. Sonu easily bagged away prices for every possible junior’s singing competitions and then reached a situation where he got hold of the senior competitions as well at his young age. Later organizers had to invite him as chief guest for different competitions on singing. At 18, he did his college in Bombay via correspondence course. His dad, though an owner of an exceptional voice couldn’t make it to the big world of music mainly due to his self-pride. Hence Sonu was all set to make up what his dad had missed. Though he was a boy filled with wonders in his voice nobody was ready to take this 17 year old lad seriously until he met the late Gulshan Kumar of T-series. Firstly it was Usha Khanna who introduced him to composer Amar Utpal, who made it clear to him that he would keep the song he recorded for Aaja Mer Jaan only if he found it good. However fate had something else in store for Sonu as this song got dubbed by S.P.Balasubrahmaniam. Though he sang 5 songs for the movie, 4 of them where rejected but the 5th song made Gulshan Kumar summon him. Thus Sonu’s ambitions slowly began taking its colours and he sang his first ever hit song ‘Acha Sila Diya Tune Mera Pyar’ for the movie Bewafa Sanam.

Before talking about his albums, films etc I want to share about Sonu as a person rather a singer. Sonu is not at all party buff, infact he’s totally against the partying culture in India. No, he isn’t very socializing personality, not even with film folks. He accepts that he does his work and returns home. Sonu is an introvert, he likes mixing with only those he is dear and near to, like his two sisters and close friends. They plan out for picnics or prefer doing fun stuffs at home itself. Sonu loves traveling and so he does a lot of concerts all over except in Bombay, he says that will cut down his exposure.

Sonu claims that he would have become a scientist if he couldn’t at all make it to a singer. He says if he was a writer he would only prefer writing non-fictions insisting on truthful happenings around the world. He tells that if he could steal anything without being caught then it would be Kohinoor Diamond and bring it back to where it belonged, India. His favourite character is Super Man and he says if he was gifted his powers he would bring permenant peace in the world and fly around everywhere physically. And in his next life Sonu prefers being an eagle if he is an animal (I guess Koel was far better…). The only person he’s ever been envious about is ‘Michel Jackson’ and the only thing he’s afraid of is cockroaches. He loves to see people around him to be always happy and he is a great admirer of nature. The only lady he wishes to date with is Merlin Monroe and he is unhappy that she isn’t alive to make is wish true. His all time author is Richard Clarkson and he adores his book –‘Don’t Sweat the Small Things’. He enjoys Indian and Chinese foods and his favourite drink is plain water (haha…). Movies he doesn’t mind watching again and again are Amar Prem, Kunwara Baap, Half-ticket, Sholay and The Sixth Sense and he loves the song ‘Duniya Rang Rangeeli Wah Wah’ by K.L.Sehgal. And Sonu’s motto is “Just Live and Let Live”. Sonu’s wife’s name is Madhurima, they got reunited after a temporary separation on January 2005.Ok guys that’s quite a bit of information I guess.

Returning to his film track, after Bewafa Sanam in 1995, he sang for movies, Gaddar and Barsat for the same year. In years 1997 and 98 Sonu was offered with lot many movies to sing for. These two years helped him to be launched as a young achiever. Meanwhile Sonu Nigam’s first album, Uski Yadoon Mein’ got released, naturally thundering a major hit. This was followed by Bewafai, Yaad, Jaan, Mausam, Deewane, Kismat etc… with latest Chanda Ki Doli that was released in 2005.

His songs where very much noticeable and appreciated from the latest movies, Fanna (‘Mere Hath Main’ and ‘Dekho Na’), (Chup Chp Ke (‘Dil Vich Lagyave’ and ‘Mausam Hai Bada Qatil’) and Krrish (‘Pyar Ki Ek Kahani’ and ‘Koi Tumsa Nahin’). Also, Sonu is hosting a Zee Television, talented singers hunt programme : Sa Re Ga Ma.

In the following years, Sonu’s fan list has only and always kept increasing in immense. This young and handsome singer has loads more in store to satisfy all hindi music lovers in years to come….
