I should actually ask what was 'I' SOCH-ing when I

decided to watch this movie? I must admit here at the

outset - I have a heavy bias against all hindi movies.

I am an out and out English-movies-only kind of guy.

My friends had always been complaining that I bad

mouth hindi movies without watching them. So I bravely

shelled out cash and settled into a small seat in a

multiplex. I thank my lucky starts that I am sane

enough to tell this story!

The whole experience of watching SOCH has got me

thinking - what makes a director and a producer make a

film? What makes them hire actors and actresses and

pay them hundreds of thousands of rupees. What drives

them? Good story? Good money from the box office?

what? What drove them to make SOCH?

Sanjay Kapoor as usual again acts in a no-brainer kind

of role. Raveena Tandon's acting seems unconvincing and she's stuck with a meaningless role. Can you believe that a girl with stunning beauty would be a director instead of being a model or an actress? Arbaaz Khan does a decent job in his role as a crazy lunatic. Aditi Gowitrikar doesnt have much to do except drink scotch and be a helpless love-needy crazy wife. Danny Denzongpa again (and again and again and again) does his strict-policeman-stricter-father role (what a waste!).

The story itself is convoluted. Sanjay Kapoor is the good husband and film hero but cant help it wen his wife is wayward and a drunkard. Raveena Tandon is his film's director who cant help falling in love with the much married Sanjay Kapoor. Out of nowhere pops out Arbaaz Khan who kills Sanjay's wife as a favour to Sanjay; even though Sanjay never asks for it (Arbaaz is like that only - stark raving crazy.) When Sanjay finds out Arbaaz's SOCH, then starts the fight to the finish.

So my stupid brain keeps asking some questions - why does Danny Denzongpa always keep away from his house? When he knows that his son is a lunatic why doesnt he admit him in an asylum? Why is his son still on the loose when his son has killed his wife? WHy deos Danny spend body-hugging-romantic-moments with his wife with the room's door ajar? Why does Sanjay Kapoor almost never take his cap off in the movie? Why arent there enough policemen around and why does Danny handle all the cases almost single handedly. Why is the story so unconvincing?

What should I look for in a good hindi movie? Should I go see another one?
