Rohit Shetty is back with yet another Diwali extravaganza, with a high-action Bollywood feast starring his favorite actors. The film trailer looked promising, despite substandard acting, with lots of action and stunts. Featuring Ajay Devgn reprising his iconic role as Bajirao Singham, this film serves as a direct continuation of Rohit Shetty’s cop universe. The film, with Ajay Devgn in his role, was thrilling, but the story and execution didn't do justice to the prequels. The Singham series is known for dishing out action-packed sequences and gripping narratives but this fell miles short of expectations set by the prequels on most counts.
The Narrative:
The narrative draws heavily on themes from the epic Ramayana, which adds a mythological layer to the otherwise typical masala action film. It runs parallel to the Ramayana theme, with Ajay Devgn being the main protagonist and with the help of his cop friends, tries to rescue the love of his life. However, while the film's premise is engaging, it suffers from an uneven structure. Instead of a tightly woven plot, the film focuses too much on action and dialogue. Apart from Veer Sooryavanshi(Akshay) and Simmba(Ranveer), there are new cops like DCP Shakti and ACP Satya played by Deepika and Tiger who help Singham bust a drug syndicate ‘Lanka’ for abducting Singham’s wife Avni(played by Kareena).
The Insights:
While Singham Again chooses a bold storyline with a lot of potential, much of that is wasted on cliched dialogues and predictable plot twists. The VFX is decent and the scenic shooting locations in Kashmir add to the charm. The first half is well-paced and you are kept excited by what roles will each actor play. The screenplay is credited to six writers, which may explain some of the inconsistencies throughout the film. While the dialogue features moments of clever humor, especially when different cops from the cop universe meet, overall writing is average. However, you’ll the chemistry between Ajay and Kareena, and Ajay and Ranveer.
Winning Elements:
Despite its flaws, Singham again does shine in a few aspects. The acting, especially by Ajay and Ranveer is decent and their chemistry wins over you. The plot is also thoughtful even though the execution might not feel seamless. The action choreography is amazing and the scenes do feel realistic. Little cameos like Akshay and even Salman Khan bring the loudest cheers. The overall visual appeal, with stunning locations, makes it a more pleasant watch than the previous Singham movie.
Final Thoughts:
Singham Again is a mixed bag that provides a great experience to the fans of Bollywood action films. Despite its issues with pacing and uneven narrative structure, it is well made in terms of strong performances, especially by Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh, along with great action sequences, Rohit Shetty skillfully blends nostalgia in parts, keeping the audience hooked. However, a better performance from other actors like Deepika and Tiger could’ve made this an all-time banger film. Although not as successful as 2011 Singham, Singham Again is a decent one-time watch for action lovers.
