The Shillong tour will never be complete unless you visit the "Wankhere"(please correct my spelling)butterfly museum, an unbelievably beautiful collection of butterfly and insects by one single person.I came to know about it in a Bengali travel magazine.
Unfortunately very few people knew or heard about this place in Shillong.I walked down all the way to the museum from Pinewood hotel by asking passerby. It was a nice leisurely walk from police bazar up to "Sony Mandir", from there a downward road toward "CA school".
Prepare yourself for a real surprise.A Bengali gentleman, in the early 20th. century visited Shillong, married a Khasi lady and devoted his whole life in pursuit of entomological study, collection and preservation. He was a self-taught entomologist.
The collection consisted of different varieties of butterflies and insects. It was a huge collection, preserved and maintained very neatly. The museum was well looked after by his daughter.
Although charges seemed high(Rs 50/, for entry and Rs10/ per shot) but it was worth the money. You could also buy mounted butterflies for gift. The lady was very helping and had lots of tells about her father and family.
Please visit this place and let us know your impression.
