Sarkar
A Ram Gopal Varma film usually promises something different, innovative and hard hitting realism.
Sarkar is without doubt an interesting film. The story, its execution, the performances, the drama... The outcome leaves you spellbound.Sarkar deals with crime, greed, family relationships and revenge.
Sarkar is about a family in a powerful position and a man who does things outside the law. He lives life according to own certainty and nevertheless has a sense of right and wrong. The main issue that is portrayed in Sarkar is that of the complexities of family and politics on a high level.
Sarkar is a desi adaptation of Hollywood classic called '' The Godfather''.
Subhash Nagre(Amitabh Bachan) does what he feels is right, then let it be against God, against society, against law or against the entire system. The black and white frames of the trailer subsequently translate into color with a close up shot of Amitabh Bachchan sipping tea in the typical parish fashion. Bachchan just speaks through the intensity of his eyes. “There are no rights and wrongs, only power” is what Sarkar has to say.
Amitabh appeared for the shot dressed in a black shirt, black South Indian lungi and heavy beads of rudraksha maala around his neck. He plays a powerful character in the film where everybody addresses him as Sarkar.
Supriya Pathak plays Bachchan's wife in Sarkar who is married to him for almost three decades and remains unperturbed at the gory happenings in their house.Sarkar has 2 sons - Vishnu(Kay Kay Menon) plays their elder son who endorses his father in his crime business. Rukhsar plays Kay Kay's wife.
Shankar(Abhishek Bachchan) plays the younger son, who is initially shown studying abroad and is in love with Pooja(Katrina Kaif). But when he returns to India, his mother wants him to get married to Tanisha who has been in their home from her childhood.
Incidents happen and events unfold. Sarkar soon finds himself threatened by his own son Vishnu who has joined the rival gang. That’s when Shankar realizes that it’s time to take the reins into his own hands.
Sarkar is a slow pace, extreme realism and the fact that it’s a film without the regular song and dance.
However, the cons are balanced by the brilliant performances of Amitabh Bachchan and Kay Kay Menon. Abhishek doesn’t have much of a role in the first half of the film but impresses in the second half. More than impacting dialogues or aggressive body language, it’s the facial expressions of the actors that take this motion picture to a completely different level. Abhishek of course seems to be riding on a new wave of confidence after Yuva.
Not taking away anything from Ramu’s direction, which is in fact good as usual, he could’ve done much more with the talent he had at hand. All of stars in the movie did justice to their roles and to say the title role in Sarkar is something only Amitabh Bachchan could do.
