Success rides high they say. And that has never been more true. Sania Mirza, a cult in Indian and any Tennis circle, has just ONE WTA victory to show. Even so, her third and fourth round losses notwithstanding, she is an icon now. An inspiration for the future girls.
And if this is the inspiration that our future needs, then, by golly, God bless them. I am not anti Sania but the simple fact that she is more beauty than talent adds fuel to the debate whether she deserves what she has today. Or maybe she does. Her beauty is nothing to be ashamed of. Infact, it should be a propellant not a channel.
What has she done to get all the attention she is getting? She is the first Indian girl to reach as far as she did in a grand slam. SO WHAT? Is that the benchmark we judge ourselves by? Is waiting for a grand slam win not justified?
Not that she does not need help and support. Any of it is welcome as long as we use that and work that to our advantage. But that can happen only by hardwork, by sweating it out in practice courts.
But maybe, we can take posing for cameras and getting big banner advertisements to be substituted for hard work. Her rankings seem to be directly proportional to the number of advertisements she does or the number of events she goes to.
Maybe everybody can. But I can not.
