The rain washed the cricket match at Durham and denied India what would have been their fourth consecutive ODI win. I, like everybody else, was terribly dissapointed but I was not complaining too much as that gave me the oppurtunity to watch this beautiful film which forced me to write my first review in the last seven months (i've been lazy of late).
The story of the film, though, is nothing less than a fairy tale. Sabrina (Julia Ormond) is the daughter of the chauffeur of a millionare. After the death of the millionare his elder son Linus (Harrison Ford) heads the buisness but his younger brother David (Greg Kirmen) is buzy most of the time with wine & women. But David is prince of Sabrina's heart ever since she realized what love is. She always dreams about him but David ain't falling for the chauffeur's daughter or is he? Not until Sabrina returns from Paris, where her father sent her so that she could think about something other than David. There Sabrina discovers what life is all about. Her attitude towards life changes so does her hairstyle and the way she dresses. So much so that David fails to recognise her and in short, falls for her.
In the mean time when Sabrina was at Paris, David meets the daughter of a millionare who falls in love with him and David reciprocates. But, this girl is the daughter of the man Linus wants to have a collaboration, so he pushes his mother and David to turn this affair into a relationship. But as marriage preparations were going on Sabrina returns and achieves what she always wanted, a date with David. But with a billion dollar at stake Linus ain't messing around. He tries to buy Sabrina out of David's life but he soon realises that money won't get David out of Sabina's heart so he plans the next best thing, make Sabrina fall for him.
He keeps Sabrina buzy with him, takes her around in his planes, choppers, limo's to every place he could, where they both are alone. He keeps her away from David. His plan was simple keep Sabrina buzy with him until the marriage and if she falls for him then arrange her absence from the marriage so that David won't make a fuss about it (a billion dollar mind but dozen a dime heart). He strikes gold when Sabrina finally accepts him but its too late for him. He's neck deep in love with her so he can't cheat her any more. The dozen a dime heart betrays him and he confesses his plan to Sabrina. Devastated Sabrina decides to walk out of their lives.
Realizing his mistake Linus asks David to go to Sabrina but David soon realises that a billion dollar mind won't sacrifice a billion dollar without a say from his heart. What happens next? Do I have to tell you? But anyway Star Movies is most probably airing this film in their Monsoon Passion series so you can check the rest out.
Apart from the story the other major strengths of the film are its screenplay and dialouges. Sydney Pollack's direction is simply superb. The kind of guy Linus is you won't expect Sabrina to fall for him but it looks so natural that you can think of only one way the film could end, and that's the way it actually does end. Harrison Ford & Julia Ormond leave you speechless with their performances.
I could go on writing but to cut a long review short, this is a sweet little film which you can watch to take a break from your regular & monotonous timetable or from the regular films which you usually watch. So go ahead and Enjoy.
