AIRCEL RPG Cellular was taken over by Aircel (NOT AirTel) a few months back.
Aircel is the operator in the Tamil Nadu circle. Aircel is #1 in TN going by the subscriber base. By taking over RPG Cellular, Aircel has extended his coverage in circles. Now Aircel has been taken over by Hutch and hence this review should be under Hutch heading but since the Aircel brand still exists, I am writing here.
The latest review in mouthshut.com on Aircel (RPG) was written in Nov 03. Lot of changes have happened since then. So, I thought I should let everyone know about it.
Network
One of the widest coverage of the city till Airtel came up with its ER network. But since I havent used Airtel I wouldnt know their extent of coverage. I have not faced a network problem in Chennai. I don't think there is any other network which can provide such wide coverage.
Network congestion would have been a topic of discussion a few days back. but now, there is absolutely no congestion. Calls get across on first try. And I haven't got any complaints saying your mobile wasn't reachable etc etc. So that means the network is working fine.
Customer Service
Not the best in the business. But even AirTel which is such an established brand is known to be the worst in the industry in this aspect. I have heard ''Vanakkum Aircel'' (Means Greetings, Aircel when translated from tamil) being the first words spoken by the customer care officer. Now they have changed over to English thankfully.
They have a pitiable system interface. It will ask you to dial Star '''' to continue. I don't understand why thats needed. You dial them to continue only na? Why should you press '''' again?
Billing
I have never had any problems with their billing service. I have always paid for what I talked. Best Part of Aircel I suggest that you take their prepaid service. I am on postpaid though. I say prepaid because, SMS is free. Completely free. Local, National & even ISD SMS is FREE. You can type away to glory.
I was on prepaid before migrating into postpaid because I shifted to a corporate CUG connection.
But all of you out there, whenever you are in the city of Chennai, you can try the Prepaid service of Aircel. You will not be dissappointed.
I haven't touched upon the issue of the history of RPG Cellular-to-Aircel-to-Hutch-to-I don't know what. I hope somebody reviews that. In this fast-changing industry I guess keeping yourself abreast of the corporate changes is absolutely necessary.
