About 6 months back, right after my return from India I wrote a review on Advice On Current Musical Trends. Not once did
I realize that, my thoughts will be echoed in some way. Coming to the movie, ROCK ON.... music does ROCK, movie could have been better though. so yeah.. there goes the early spoiler of the review.
ROCK ON is a story of 4 dreamy friends living LIfe to the fullest.. reminds Dil Chahta Hain?? Well, ignore that you had ever watched Dil Chahta Hain and keep going. These four friends are great musicians in their own way and make a band of their own, win a competition a
Rock On and also a chance to cut an album too. As I mentioned in my earlier review on Advice on Current Musical Trends, most of the artists have big egos, so egos clash and the band disintegrates. Each of the band members go back to lead their so called real/practical lives, some struggling to make ends meet while some trying to cope with the choices they made.
The purpose of living for the next 10 years for these yesteryear dreamstars is just survival leaving their ambitions behind. As Main Samay Hoon reminds us time and again (that Samay bada Balwaan Rey Bhaiyya..), one fine day, an eventful reunion happens. But not everything is as smooth. For What happens next, do watch the movie.
Music wise, the movie belongs to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Farhan. My pick is Tum Ho Toh followed by Sindbad Sailor. Apparently, Farhan got trained under Shankar to develop his singing skills and micmicking on the screen as well. Listening to Tum ho Toh, for once, I almost thought it was KK and not Farhan.
Man, just when I was thinking that this trio had lost their glory with ridiculous Jhoom Barabar Jhooms and the like, they jump back with this ROCKing surprise. The best thing about the music in this movie is the message for piracy conveyed in a very appealingly funny manner towards the end. "Please do not download the music, Buy the CD."
Performances:
Arjun Rampal.. => The Man.
Farhan.. => The Singer better than the Actor
Purab Kohli.. => The Entertainer, each of our friend circles have one such lively guy. He stole the show with that I will survive song and dance sequence.
Luke Kenny => Very Decent performance.
Prachi Desai => Too cute and even her role was similar to the one that Gayathri Joshi had in Swades but much better actress than the latter. Herein, felt like she was her ownself all along in the movie, even the innocent way of accepting that "Mujhe sirf Hindi Gaane hi pata hain". Very rare to find such actresses though :)
Shahana Goswami => Talent unearthed. Very impressive for sure. She reminds me of Shefali from Satya. But not even any pics to be found on the internet of hers :(
Anu Malik => Made me laugh to death with his kiss in the first scene with Luke Kenny.
If you like to watch movies like Dil Chahta Hain, Rang De Basanti, Yuva, Lakshya which make you feel good, pump your enthusiasm and look within yourselves to trace back the real YOU and chase those ambitions in your Life, then go ... ROCK ON.
Enjoy the movie and may we all "Live our dreams!!" as most of our teachers (today being Teacher’s day) use to suggest us when we were growing.
ROCK ON .. hain yeh waqt ka ishara...
