This century old College was established in the year 1868 and it became a university only in the year 2006. It is a co-educational institution offering courses in arts, sciences, commerce etc. Their PG department is equally diversified. The university has 27 departments and PHD program is offered in all the departments. College offers hostel facilities to a large number of students who flock the institution from around the region for qualitative education.
I was a student here in the department of Political Science and passed out in the year 1996. The college initially came under Calcutta university and later got affiliated to Utkal University in 1943. The college is famous for churning out a lot civil servants during the 1960s from mostly the Political Science & English Department. Its library is the largest in Odisha and is named after Kanika Raja.
Some notable alumni from this institution are Biju Patnaik(politician), Biswanath Das(politician), Ramesh Prasad Mahapatra(archaeologist), G.B. Pattnaik(32 CJI) etc. This esteemed institution is a great place for education in this region but there is a lot of space for improvement which needs to be done to re-establish the reputation it had gained 3 - 4 generation ago.
