Though I am not too enthusiastic about cricket, I do watch it becuase it is one of the sport that gave us best recognition in the world today.
I think we have to address some pitfalls of the current team, and prevent it from recurring. Thse include
There should be a measurement of a cricketer not only based on individual performance, but also weighing it based on the outcome of the game. i.e. Individual contribution will be multiplied by the outcome of the match(+ in case of a win and - otherwise). Effectively, players should not be made to concentrate too much on their career because, it may make them play selfish to retain their position in the team, rather than playing it for the sheer passion for cicket. We have talent in abundance.
Selection commitee should be free of politics and other influences and should be based on pure performace of the player. I think ours is one of the most corrupt system and various influences including money, politicians and senior players play roles in selecting or dropping players for personal reasons. This should be made transparent and should be based on numeric measurement / statistics of the player's performance. This criteria for selecting / dropping a player should be publicised to the Indian cricket fans.
Media should not project cricketers as heroes. They must be treated in par with other sports.
Cricket board should keep a tab on various endorsements made by the player and there should be a limit. Otherwise, player gets too distracted and may even become amateur cricketer! Cricket should be only for 100% professionals.
There should be a measure of improvements from every game that is lost. Lessons learnt should be strictly maintained in records.
Oh! Am I dreaming too much.?! OK, more ideas will pour in, I am sure.
