If you’re like me, you sometimes get the craving for the sweet, fizzy buzzy taste of the drink called Pepsi. Pepsi has been around for so long, yes, over 100 years, that I don’t usually think about where the name came from. But it’s kind of a name that makes sense. A drugstore owner and pharmacist invented made the very first Pepsi-cola to serve his thirsty customers at the soda fountain. He liked the name Pep Kola as it represented the flavor of Pepsi coming from the kola nut, and the caffeine buzz making you feel peppy. I think it’s a catchy name for this effervescent sweet cola.

I should confess that my cola of preference is usually a Coca-Cola rather than a Pepsi-Cola. I tend to prefer the hard kick a Coke gives me, and it isn’t as sweet. But sometimes I do find myself craving the very sweet somewhat softer kick of Pepsi, especially on a very hot summer day. I’ll choose Pepsi a lot when I’m a outdoor fairs or sporting events. Let’s say I’m more sociable while drinking Pepsi. When I want to stay home and have a stiff, hard drink I’ll reach for a Coke instead.

Pepsi doesn’t just make cola. They also own Frito-Lay which makes a bunch of salty snack foods like their well-known corn chips. They own Tropicana as well, who package orange and other juices. They make Mountain Dew and Mug Root Beer, too. Mug Root Beer is delicious in a root beer float with French Vanilla ice cream. Mmmmmmmm!

Over the years, you can count on Pepsi to come out with something new. In the early forties, to show their support of our troops at war, the Pepsi logo coloring was changed to red, white and blue, the colors of the U.S. flag. They came up with the very popular, among grocery shoppers, two liter plastic bottles.

They’ve come out with Pepsi Twist which has a lemon flavor, and Pepsi One which has one calorie. In the peace and love era of the sixties, Pepsi branded the youth of America the “Pepsi Generation” while the competition wanted to “…buy the world a coke”. Then in the eighties, they had a new advertising slogan for a “New Generation” of Pepsi drinkers. Now their singer-spokesmodel Britney Spears can be seen in a “Now and Then” TV ad where she celebrates the different looks from the fifties to today.

8 ounces of regular Pepsi will add 100 calories to your waistline. That’s not bad if you don’t drink too many. I am a big coffee drinker so I know that a cup of coffee can have as much or more than 100 mg of caffeine. Pepsi, on the other hand, only has about 25mg of caffeine. As summertime is fast approaching I’ll be reaching for a can of Pepsi much more frequently than a cup of hot coffee. Pepsi is a very refreshing drink that satisfies your thirst quite nicely. Now, after finishing this review, I just have to run to the store and buy a cold bottle from the cooler and enjoy the buzz of Pepsi! Thanks for reading, and stay cool this summer!
