Being in a wheelchair, and limited to only a few steps. I worried when my wife suggested that we spend her 40th birthday in Paris! However, we went to our local travel agent and they suggested a nice hotel in the Montparnasse area of Paris.

The travel went ok (on Eurostar), and the hotel was great. But we'd forgotten our comb! Our first night there and we enter into one of the many pharmacists. We tried in our broken french, and with hand signals to explain our requirements!

Now either the assistant was being awkward or she was just plain ignorant! But she did eventually get the idea of what we wanted, and proceeded to get a box of combs for our inspection. We choose one, and paid our 162 french francs, and departed back to our hotel. It was only there when we checked the price of the comb that we actually realised we had just paid £16.20 for it!

Now not everything is that expensive. Oh no, you can pick up a bottle of wine for about £1.50, a cup of tea (take your own tea is my advice) £2.50, a cup of coffee £1.50!

We had a meal in a restaurant, which consisted of raw salmon for starters, undercooked (red) steak, and a very sweet afters, which cost £20 per person, and was awful. We then ate fromMacDonalds.

However, all that aside Paris has some beautiful things to see. The bridges across the Sein are very artistic, and some extremely pretty. I was totally gob smacked by the beauty of the Eiffel tower - it was awesome (my wife wasn't too struck though).

The arc de triumph was also worth viewing. The Champs de Ellysee was simply a street of shops, where upon entry into a cafe we were made to feel uncomfortable. And soon left.

I would suggest that you know at least the basics of the language, and the rough cost of things. If you wish to order a coffee make sure its the right sort. We ended up with tiny cups of coffee which was almost as thick as a thick shake and un-drinkable (by us).

All that said, Paris is worth a visit, and it need not cost the earth if you find more ecconomical ways (i.e. self catering-self drive etc)

Oh yes, and don't forget your comb!
