My friend Oz mentioned that Hitch was lifted from various TV sitcoms in US. No! I have conclusive proof that it waslifted from PADOSAN. They just hollywoodised it a bit, threw in a few kisses, chaged the songs into a dance and produced a hit film. Our DD being more outward looking than inward, copied from Hitch and brought back the coals to Newcastle, by making another hit Partner.
Believe me. Just this Saturday I was channel surfing, when I chanced upon Padosan. I settled down to watch it. The story: Sunil Dutt, Bhola, is a rustic matric(or was it 5th) fail, seedha saadha, dhoti clad simpleton. He falls for his pretty, sophisticated, urban-bred neighbour, Saira Banu, Bindu. He has to snatch her away from her song /dance master - Mehmood. For that, he has to be able to sing. Our lady loves the vocal arts. Our hero is challanged in that category. He has a clique of friends lead by Vidyapati(Kishore Kumar) who try to help him out by imparting music lessons. Everytime Bhola tries to sing, a donkey responds, and curious crowds gather at his doorstep.
A harried Vidyapati then thinks of providing'playback' vocals to Bhola. D day arrives, Bhola learns the lyrics and appears at the window, cheekily singing'Mere samne wali khidki mein'. Bindu is suitably impressed, and simpers expectantly at Bhola after the song is over. Bhola is happy and wants to just hang around gaping at Bindu. Vidyapati pulls back Bhola and his minions CLOSE THE WINDOW.
FOLKS THIS IS THE PROOF. This scene was lifted by HITCH when Will Smith closes the door on Albert just as his date with Allegra is set. See - the movie is a total lift.

Allegra is a sophisticated career woman. - Bindu is rich, sophisticaled, urban
Hitch is the know it all Love Guru - Vidyapati and Bhola go through a ceremony marking him as Bhola's guru.
Hitch nearly messes up his own love life trying to help Albert - Vidyapati also almost loses Anuradha because of singing for Bhola

Why PADOSAN beats them all hollow.
1. Neither Salman nor Will Smith can come within miles of Kishore Kumar, his dhoti, his paan chewing, his lovely locks, his magnificent singing.
Sunil Dutt is handsomer than Kevin James and Govinda.
Saira Banu spouts enough attitude to kill Allegra Cole, Eva Mendes, Katrina Kaif and Lara Dutta singlehandedly. She is tempramental and scorches everyone around her, but when she is all soft on Bhola, butter wont melt in her mouth.
4. THE SONGS ARE AWESOME.
5. A killer supporting cast, Dulari, Agha, Om Prakash, Keshto Mukerjee, Mukri - Kahan gaye wo log.
