First of all, let me tell you when I was watching this movie, it reminded me of an era where deciot films were admired a lot. Some of them who falls in this category - SHOLAY, JIS DESH ME GANGA BEHTI HAI etc.'PAAN SINGH TOMAR' is one of them. Is there any difference then? Yes. In this story there is chambal, but hey, no horses, nor bikes or cars. However, you will see some cows, buffaloes and sometimes a police jeep.
This 2 hours 15 mins journey of PST is amazing.
The first half of the movie shows how determined PST is for his country. Never backs down to any orders given in the military, and does very perfectly and was damn impressive. His journey to become the national level gold medalist atlete is amazing. He brings honour to the country, but felt betrayed when he needed the country the most.
The second half enlightens the reasons that impelled a sportsman to take law on his hands. A series of unfortunate events forced PST to give up atletes and become the'baaghi' of chambal. The reason that forced Paan Singh to pick up the gun comes across emotively and sensitively. The second half could have been shorter one and the pace of the movie goes a bit slow as compared to first.
The director'Tigmanshu', who directed some movies like HAASIL, SHAGIRD proves to be having continue his trend of creating another classic.
He elaborates his character's life right from the time PST joined the armed forces, becoming a national level athlete to the'baaghi' of chambal.
This is one of the best performances of Irfaan Khan. He is impressive and while you watch this movie, you will come to know how hard work he has done for this character. Mahie Gill was good. Vipin Sharma and Rajendra Gupta, both excel in their respective characters.
A must watch for those who prefer performances and storyline over entertainment.
My rating: 4.8 outta 5!
