Dibakar Banarjee delivers another masterpiece after Khosla Ka Ghonsla, and this one again based on real life incidence.** Yes, the superthief Lucky is not a fantasized character but a real one, who had rocked Delhi like anything in late 90's. Then I was a student in DU and used to find almost everyday news of burgulary in very daredevil manner.
*The name of original burgular was perhaps Bunty, not Lucky. A guy from a Sardar family of Tilak Nagar, who later become Mauna, was charming from beginning as well as his mind was so resolved to achieve his objectives. Life started in a poor family with scarcities while life fascinated with glitz, high society living and people and later the sole objective of life to come out of this Kanglapan and become a high profile respected man...who even manages to open a big restaurant in very porshe area of Delhi.
*Lucky becomes a thief who picked up his targets with extreme love and confidence, never hurt anyone and never got violent. Same time this man hated addictions.
Whatever Luck achieved in his life was not alone but with help of his childhood friend, ...Bangali...excellently played by the Director of this movie Dibakar Banarjee himself.*
Within a span of few years Luky delivers unbelievable burglaries....so much confident that he would take away the goods from house in front and face of the owners, learnt even how to make dogs friendly and broke all records of burgularies.
Cops tried to catch him manytimes and he escaped manytimes from their clutches.
The only thing Lucky could not achieve in his life and the remorse of which always stayed with him was. ... his inability to talk fluently in English... the language he felt most spoken by high society people! So much so that he even asked his partner bangali to learn English speaking!!!
Oye Lucky may sound as another Bunty Bubli...but its not so. The entire movie has been catered to you in believable and real manner. Dibakar Banarjee very intelligently puts before you the entire development chart of a thief alognwith his age, his surroundings, kinds of friends, his mind and its reactions ... and above all gives a very general message to all of us ...." If Want To Become Best in your Profession, Start Loving it!". Whatever Lucky did, he did with smile and affection...even a stolen pet became obedient to him! And those people whose house were victims, even did not hate him.
Coming to performances ... everyone was good but the real one is delivered by 4 people.Abhay Deol, the director Dibakar Banarjee himself as Bangali and though small, but effective Nitu Chandra, as college going love interest of Lucky whose mom would demand to Lukcy everytime something for household.
Abhay Deol is an exceptional Deol ..becuase to this time he has not worked in a single nonesense movie. His every selection has been sensible and this speaks about his personality as a thinking mature person with some quality taste, who enjoyes the psyche of the character he portrayes ... be it Manorma or be it Ek Chalis Ki Local, Socha Na Tha or be it Ahista Ahista. This man knows his taste very well and honestly sticks to it ..giving us quality movies..unlike any typical deol. His dialogue delivery style is cool and holds emotions very well below his facial skin. In Today genere there are few actors who guarentee you cool quality movies like Vinay Pathak, Rahul Bose, Irrfan Khan and Abhay Deol. They are the future of good movies and they must do lots of movies. None of them needed any Godfather or Chopra to become famous.
Dibakar Banarjee, the director, is an actor here first time..and as an assistant chor ..gives soul to the script. His grasp over the Delhi culture, slum culture, the bhaiship language..tu bhai nahi hai na..dekh le...etc...perfectly delivers an opportunist cool cut gay who would eat even sh*t to survive. How to maintain even worst people in relationships, how to make two enemies friends at a time and still carry on..how to become shameless enough to ditch friend and still reappear with statements like "Bhool Chook Leni Deni". Claps for Banarjee, who is actual discovery of this movie.
Third most impressive was Neetu Chandra, a college goer, from a disgruntled family who has no inhibitions to earn money but this girl has...conscious about some ethics and morality which her sister and mother dont even understand. Watch her for the sensuality she carries in her sharp dusky face and appearance, her intelligent mind coming through her performance. **After a long time I have found some real good heroine material who has got the real things, talent as well as X-factor to appeal to opposite sex..without any showoff or nudity. Watch her in the scene where Lucky takes her for a drive to show his stunts to impress her!
Chota Lucky Sardar: I dont know this sardar kid, but whoever he is..he has delivered terrific job...his body language, his dialogues and his expressions..exactly like those staying in small colonies of Delhi. He is something to watch for.
Paresh Rawal has been used in multiple characters, father of lucky, Gogi bhai a broker of stolen goods as well as Handa Saheb ..the utlimate con who dupes Lucky on the name of hotel business. He is good, but now Paresh bhai looks tired. He needs to discover himself again as it seems he is not enjoying his life as an actor much.*
Archana Pooran Singh as a greedy wife has done excellent job, who makes lucky as Bhai when money is needed and throws him like anything once the purpose is solved. The movie on technical front is good. But it stands high on two factors: Direction of Dibakar Banarji, his honest and intelligent understanding and projections and second for the superb performances by four above mentioned characters.
Songs are punjabi remix types which fit the situations but you don't remember then once out of the hall. But finally all demerit potholes are successfully filled by its good factors.
Of this season, after Dasavidania( A must watch) this movie is another Must watch. You will love it.
