Orkut dot com. Review on Orkut

I am a member of both the communities - friendster & orkut since a couple of years and I must say that orkut members have increased phenomenally ever since its release.

On a historical note this site was designed by a turkish engineer called Orkut Buyukkokten and so the name orkut. In turkish language orkut means ''the holy meeting place''. Many global financial consultants think that this person will become the richest person by 2009. This person has 13 assistants to monitor his scrapbook & 8 assistants to monitor his friends-list. He gets around 20,000 friend-requests a day & about 85,000 scraps a day. Orkut was released in early 2004 and now it has over millions of users.

This website is a clone site of friendster , but still with its release friendster has taken a backseat. It has lightening speed & much better features then friendster.

Lets take a look at the features :

Firstly u cannot be a user unless someone invites u to open an orkut account. Also the registration form is very long but its not mandatory to fill up all the information. The only thing mandatory is that u require to type in ur full name. The rest of the things are optional

Secondly u need to have a google account to access this site. U can log in with ur google id & password.

Coming to the homepage, it is quite user friendly and loads in a jiffy. U can partially see the friends list , the list of communities u r a member of , the testimonials ur friends have written about you & u also have the option to edit ur profile and photoalbum.

Orkut is more of a dating site where anybody can search for profiles and add u as a friend. So it it better to judge the person and know him virtually before u directly jump in to meet the person.

The second feature is the scrapbook

It is also called as the war of the scrapbooks as each and every friend on ur list will try to fill it up by some sweet msgs or just drop in to say hi/hello. U can also wish ur friend on any occassions like his /her budday , anniversary , seasonal greetings by scrapping in his/her scrapbook. The person with highest number of scraps wins the war (just kidding)

The third feature is the testimonials

Here a person can write about what kind of a person u r. He can write as much as he wants coz there in no character limit. Other people can judge what type of a person u r by reading ur testimonials.

The fourth feature is the photoalbum :

U can upload as many photographs as u wish to. One can easily access ur photographs by clicking on the photoalbum. Any photographs of pets , cartoons , porn are strictly not allowed.

The fifth feature is ur profile :

It consists of things like u have to describe urself , ur hobbies , ur interests , ur professional life , ur personal looks , ur turn on's and turn off's. U can make up ur own profile but make sure it is very appealing as this serves as the root for a new orkut relationship

The sixth feature is the community :

This is perhaps one of the best feature in orkut. There are various communities which are very helpful and u can share ur views & opinons on anything and everything. U can also create ur own community. For example I have created my own community called as the D GANG. Here we share whatever stuff we feel like sharing

The seventh feature is the inbox

Any orkut member can email u and the best part of it is it is free of spam and junk. So there is not a possiblity of anyone spamming ur inbox. U can use it to give out social msg's and personal msg's

As they say every coin has two sides , orkut has its bad points too

Due to its increasing popularity , the server is always loaded and many a times u get the error msg '' NO DONUT FOR U''.

Also some people can create bogus id's and profile and get on ur nerves by scrapping u and sending u friendship requests. Pls beware of such kind of people.

So all in all it is quite a user friendly site and is widely used in india , brazil and many other countries. And lastly anyone who wants to become a member can leave a comment in the comment box. I'll be more then happy to invite you.
