Colours, sparkle, drama, tragedy, comedy, fantasy.70s, 90s, 2000s, a complete bollywood film. Om Shanti Om, the movie that I awaited with a lot of tension, especially checking for my ticket 20 times before I entered INOX, was worth the money. It sang songs of'Om Shanti Om', junior artists did dhinkchak dhinchak numbers, the tragedy of the heroine, the OM saga, the pichla janam, the comedy that flicks a smile on your face. It's all good, so is the villain, who you know is not capable or empowered to do anything to Shahrukh because SRK is the inimitable KIng. This movie is fun to watch if you're really looking at a happy, fun-loving entertainer, this is like asking for'time-please' when you're strssed out after a hard-days's meeting and want to go home and burst firecrackers. This movie is a fire-cracker. But it's definately not a super-duper hit. It's your diwali-break. A big box of Mithai if you want to call it that. Its not a classic touch of Taj Mahal hotel, high tea. It is your samosas and chai with a couple of filmy friends. Now lets really discuss what its all about.
Plot: Arey this movie has no plat, its all SRK and Farha Khan's 5 hour phone conversation, which we saw them execute in Karan Johar's Koffee with Karan show. Well, the story basically is pretty predictable, we have seen plenty of shots in Hollywood and mostly by the look of it, Shahrukh borrows briefly from Micheal J.Fox of the Back to the Future fame. Junior artist loves Heroine, Heroine has a secret. Heroine trapped in Tragedy. Junior artist hits back with a vengeance. You feel safe, coz SRK is at the rein. The story has its own twists and turns but you're not getting bored. Thank god for that. I am guaranteeing you'NO BOREDOM' . If I compare a plotless movie like Jab we met to this one, JWM wins, hands down.
Dialogues: Rahul, naam toh suna hoga.Even all those Rahul's who were happy that people finally got over SRK's line from Kuch Kuch hota hai in their college days, this line would make them remember how incessantly irritating it was. And now maybe they won't mind using it on their recent love interests. Borrowing from Gone with the wind, old 70's movies, the dialogues spring from anywhere but with such clever pun, that the Indian audience who is really discerning will find it hilarious of their usage in a Hindi cinema, c'mon, Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn - A classic dialogue, used on a villain, has its own charm. But I wonder if my mom got it.Basically everything is so filmy and time-pass. There are no dialogues that are rememberable. You see what I mean.
Direction: Well directed. Some scenes touch you, like the one where SRK turns and looks over the fallen chandelier and catches a glimpse of the heroine, is beautiful, quite mesmerising actually. The film is ingenious that SRK and his director show such compatibility, because this movie flows so well with all that energy, you overlook the flaws, with SRK filling the empty scenes with his chappar chappar.
Actors:
SRK lives up to his star status. He needn't have exposed his six pack, his acting does the job pretty well. In fact, we wouldn't have minded Arjun shedding a little clothing.
Kiron Kher, ekdum filmy Ma. Well acted, gives the audience the 70s stereotype. Thank goodness, she isn't giving any fundoo acts, she sticks to her character, and she does well.
Shreyas Talpade proves a good sidekick in this commercial movie opposite SRK. He underplays the role and stays put, realising its SRK who's going to capture the screen, he demurely takes a bow of a dear old friend. Fantastic guy, indeed.
Arjun Rampal, does a damn god job, I don't even remember his acting, but now I wonder why he wasn't given better roles. Well done.
Deepika Padukone, man, she actually had dialogues! Pretty picture she makes, she can act, but well, she'll need to take the Aishwarya Rai path if she wants to make it big, and as a debut, she did alright. But I guess the real debutant actor, who carried the film on his shoulders is Muzammil Ibrahim of Dhoka, but that's another story. Well, Deepika you need Sanjay leela Bhansali movies if you need your potential, if you have any, to be recognized.
Songs and Dance:
AAnkhon mein teri and Main agar kahoon are beautifully sung and beautifully choreographed.and'Yeh haseena, yeh neelam pari, kar gayi jo jadoo gari' arey what a dhun, and what beats, its a definitely feet tapping number and a shoulder jerking number. Dard-e-disco is absolutely my favorite track in this movie.
I saw this movie at Inox in Milan Mall and it was the first time ever I ever felt comfortable in my purple designer seat. And even if you're sitting on the fourth row seat, you won't feel that the heroine's assets are going to fall out. I mean seriously, it is well distanced. I love this theatre. But one thing that was missing is the enthusiasm of the crowd, considering it was a diwali night and all the family guys were tired, this movie should be seen with a live audience like the one I found at Gaiety, when I saw Jab we met. Well, I happened to make a plenty noise in my seat for the entire theatre, though my mom was embarassed. But hey its just a movie, and If I were Aamir Khan in Rangeela and going by his ideology, I'd call this one'Paisa Wasool'
