Computers are now a part of life and so are computer viruses. They can really devastate your life. Ask those who have suffered. I also have lost data in past because of viruses. Having a good antivirus is important if you are not using your computer only for amusement. I have seen that many people are preferring to have cheap alternates then to a good antivirus. I am strongly against this opinion. Spend a little money to save your valuable data, memories and more to it the later pain and frustration. I will be considering three major Pc antivirus softwares and will try to give a clear picture to choose. Although I will like to conclude in the introduction..Norton Antivirus is the best of all.
The three antivirus softwares are Norton AntiVirus, Mcafee Virus scan and Trend PC Cillin . I will consider some lab test results conducted to evaluate the performance of these antivirus softwares from internet, my own experience and a little here and there information
Norton antivirus
This one is best. Its a little expensive, but still worth. It has the maximum number of virus definition and more to it is effective in scanning. It is best in defending against viruses in download files or emails. In lab test it has caught all the viruses thrown at it. I have McFee at my work place, when ever I brought files at home I use Norton to scan them and I have came across viruses especially the worms and trojan horses. This shows mcfee is not that effective. It never happeend the other way. Norton antivirus has a very easy to use interface. Auto live update and auto protect are two great options and makes life very easy. The virus definitions are updtaed automatically. Norton antivirus 2001 is as good as Norton antivirus 2002. The later version is for XP and thats the only major difference. so do not bother to upgrade to 2002 from 2001 unless you have switched to XP like I did. The only Drawback is that Norton is not very effective against internet born viruses. It's more effective to detect it after the file is downloaded. This is the only place where Mcfee surpasses it (besides money).
McFee Virus Scan
Consider it if money is an issue although difference is only little (~10$). It does block viruses before they are downloaded to your PC, but let pass through many viruses and I have personally experienced it 3-4 times. Interface is very confusing and they have stopped giving you life time upgrade, its now like Norton (12 months). It may be good for network but ultimately you do need an effective antivirus and that means Norton antivirus.
Trend PC Cillin
I will not advice you for this one. It has the easiest interface but not very effective. Tests are also against it. It let pass more viruses than other two. But in future it may become the best. These people are working well and they have a nice reporting system. I have used it a few years back but have not used it recently. so can not say much but the tests have shown that it let through many viruses. My friends, who are using it, although have recently shifted to Norton. So use it if you are just a beginer and can not understand even the easy interfaces.
So the conclusion is that Norton is best in presently available antviruses. If you consider money, Mcfee is next choice. Mcfee is good to block virus infected files before download but Norton is best in screening and removing the virus. It seems a good choice to have both, but my personal experience is against it. Antiviruses effect syatem performance to certain extent so having mor ethan one antivrus software may cause conflicts and other problems. So be cautious.
Hope this information is useful.
