In recent times if you plot A.R.Rahman’s career it will give you a sine curve
with alternate peaks (hits) and valleys (flops) with Tehzeeb (flop), Kangalal
kaithi sei (hit), Lakeer(flop), Meenaxi (hit), Ayutha Ezuthu/ Yuva(hit), New
(?). Check out the review
''New'' is a Tamil movie directed by S.J.Surya who has directed two
blockbusters “Vaali” and “Kushi” in Tamil. For the first time he has joined
his hands with A.R.Rahman for this movie and the lyric writer is Vairamuthu. The album has totally 7 tracks. The album is a cocktail treat with four kinds of music with two fast and peppy number, two melodious number, one remix and one folk number and also this album is a mix up of songs of all levels of quality with two very good songs, one good song and three somewhat good songs and one bad song. Let us classify the songs on the basis of its quality and
analyze
Very Good (Rating: 10/10)
''Kalaiyil ezhundadhum”is best track of the album. The singers Unnikrishnan and Sadhana sargam (bearing her pronunciation) have done excellent job with their soft voices. It is a sweet lullaby with good tune, good piano interludes and soft pad beats. The alap of Sadhana while she starts in the middle take the song to still greater heights. This is what we expect from ARR often.
Equally good to the previous song is a seductive melody “Spider man” sung by Kunal and Sadhana sargam. The voice of Sadhana and Kunal whispers the lyrics for the whole song. The guitar piece which is the only noticeable background of the whole song is simply superb. Kunal who is heard often in ARR’s albums does a fine job in this song and the way he renders “Spiderman” three times and especially the third time is excellent and far better than that of Sadhana. The lyric by Vairamuthu is seductive, innovative and poetically vulgar. The kissing sounds, sounds of some insects and breathing sound are added here and there which delivers the mood of the song well.
Good (Rating: 7/10)
The title track of the album “New” is a fairly good song. This song is sung by a group of singers Karthik, Blaaze, Vijayprakash, Sunitha and Tanvi and the
English lyrics is by Blaaze. Blaaze is an obvious singer and writer in ARR’s
album in these days. The song starts in rap by blaze and the first Para of the
song is catchy well but as Tamil lyrics starts the song lose its pace. The
beats are similar the beats of “Girl frined”song. The lyrics is average and
the new singer Vijay prakash’s voice is good but I struggled to find his voice
in the noise. Again the song has lot of electronic sounds added like AE but
doesn’t leave the same impact.
Somewhat good (Rating: 5/10)
Here is a song “Sakkara” which gave a huge disappointment because of the Legend SPB’s comeback with Sujatha but song fails to offer something challenging to SPB’s caliber. But I admire even in his 60’s his voice is so young and suits for all third generation heroes. The song is again experimentation with nadhaswaram, thavil and Urumi melam (all traditional south Indian instruments) with western beats. But the fusion doesn’t work well and the tune is average and also its length tests your patience. The line “Utharavindri ullae vaa” alone is good and catchy.
Then follows the retuned and remixed “Thottal poo malarum” song which is a pure spoiler of the original version. The new tune of the song is good but when compared to its original version it has nothing to offer. But the voice of Harini and Hariharan makes you sit and take a listen once to the song. The same loop of beats are used for the whole song.I think this song is done by some local DJ’s and not by ARR.
The next song ''If you want to'' is a fast peppy number with 50% English lyrics (nonsense) by Blaaze and while listening you can understand that ARR has tried to do something different and yes it is different but difference doesn’t make any impact instead it irritates. This is usual freak out song of college girls and Chinmayee’s soft and sweet voice doesn’t suit for this kind of songs. The lyrics are added just to fill the gaps and nothing special to mention.
Bad (Rating: 2/10)
My previous review was “Ten worst songs of ARR” but if I would have written that review after hearing this song I would have added this song ''Kumbakonam'' to the list. The singer Nityasree is merelywasted in this song, her voice doesn’t fit this
folk number. The tunes and the beats reminds me lot of previous songs of ARR like parasuram, sangamam etc. The tune is also bad. Please ARR you can deliver far far better folk numbers than this.
As till date he didn’t sign any new projects in Tamil and as this supposed to be the last album of ARR in Tamil and there was huge expectation but the album fails to meet the expectation. I am eagerly waiting for his comeback again to Tamil. Long Live ARR.
