I recently downloaded Net2phone and tried it out. Boy was I disapointed. It offers free PC to Phone calls and while it does deliver what it says you only get 5 minutes of free talk time. As you pull up the dial pad and make your call a small timer starts to countdown from the first ring, not when your party answers.
I tried several times using this software to get the ECHO out of the calls I made. alas I had to give up all my calls echoed. All in all the sound quality was OK a little choppy at times (but how much can u complain for free calls ?) even though I have a Cable connection.
The company does offer extremely low rates if you pay for extra time. I think its around .02 a minute for US calls. but the time you will spend trying to make the calls and time asking the other party to repeat themself , out weighs just calling your local phone company and signing up for a special deal on Long Distance.
Making Calls over the internet has a long way to go in my opinion, but dont count these services out yet as companies constantly upgrade and more and more users go to Broad Band connections the quality of these services will get better. But for now I wouldnt do away with my home phone.
