A solid entertainer. Review on Naksha

Naksha was not on my must-watch list but it turned out to be a most pleasant surprise. It may be far-fetched, but the characters have such conviction in what they are doing and director Sachin Bajaj has filmed it in such an exciting fashion that it succeeds in being a fanciful entertainment and one of my favorite film of 2006.

Professor Kapil Acharya had dedicated his life to the world of archaeology. For him, the quest to know more about the world of the past was a desire. A man with utmost honest intentions, he got lucky when he got hold of an ancient map that lead to something exciting and intriguing!

Not to let the map go into the hands of evil, he preferred to die.20 years later his son Rohit [Viveik Oberoi]. Soon he comes across a copy of the same 'naksha' while.

Now Rohit has one mission in his life - to find out what was so important about this map that could have even led to his father's death! The re-emergence of this quest attracts the evil forces again, as Vicky is abducted by the villain’s henchmen.

Help comes in the guise of Vicky’s elder step-brother Veer [Sunny Deol], who is sent there by Vicky’s mother [Navni Parihaar] to get her son back.Vir now wants Rohit to forget about his deadly mission and return home safely. On the other hand Rohit has promised to himself that he would get to the depth of the secrets!

This is a great and entertaining adventure movie, despite the bad critics reviews from rediff and others. I think critics write to amuse themselves, not to critique a movie on its main importance entertainment.And Naksha scores big time on this department

The plot trying to find a lost map a clue to which leads to the era Mahabharat is so beyond belief that its best to simply begin by throwing up your hands and accepting it for what it is. Certainly the cast has thrown reality to the wind and appears to be having a grand time.

The first half has several enjoyable moments, specially the comic portions between Sunny and Vivek is truly hilarious. Even the placement of songs is perfect here. But the pace gets uneven in the second half, which is the main drawback of this enterprise.

The trouble with the screenplay is that in the post-interval portions, the pace drops at regular intervals. It gets slow, picks up again, turns slow yet again, but gathers momentum all over again in the climax. The snow chase between sunny/vivek v/s Jacky shroff, followed by a violent encounter them keeps the viewer's interest alive.

Pritam's music is easy on the ears. The title track and Jawaani leke are foottaping compositions. But it is yamla which will bring the house down. The picturisation of all the songs is first-rate. To state that the producers have spent lavishly on the film would be an understatement.

The film has an international look and the money spent is visible in every frame. Cinematography is outstanding. The animation towards the climax mainly, are expertly executed.

Sameera Reddy looks photogenic, but needs to work hard on expressions. Sunny is excellent in a role that fits him like a glove.Vivek is competent, enacting his part with flourish. Jackie goes completely over the top.

8 out of 10. Definitely worth seeing, preferably for less than what they charge for a full price movie admission these days.
