I just saw this movie a couple days ago, and I am watching it right now because it is on television for free. This movie starts with three young boys, Jimmy(Sean Penn), Sean(Kevin Bacon) and Dave(Tim Robbins). They are being typical boys and are writing their names in wet cement. All is going well until two mysterious men tell one of the boys, Dave, that he is in trouble and must come with them. The man is very forceful so Dave goes with the men. He soon realizes that these men are not police officers. Dave is tortured and abused but escapes. But the pain from these events never leaves Dave and will always effect him.
As all three of the men grow up, Jimmy is the owner of a corner store and has a nice wife named, Annabeth played by Laura Linney, and a couple daughters. One of his older daughters is named Katie, played by Emmy Rossum. As she leaves work one day, a man surprises her in her car. She is shocked but then realizes that it's just her boyfriend. They plan to run away and get away from town. But this won't happen.
Kevin Bacon aka Sean, is a police officer, FBI really, and recieves a call from a couple of kids that they have found a dead body. Sean brushes this off and goes on with his work. But after a day or so, Katie is missing. But as Jimmy is coming home, he notices that there are many police officers and cars. He is confused then is heartbroken when he finds out that his little girl has been murdered.
Jimmy goes to the morgue and says that Katie is actually Katie. They have a funeral. Sean interviews people, first an older later who heard a loud crack and someone saying hello. They are very confused. They find the guy that loved Katie and grill him, they even suspect that he killed Katie. But they give him a polygraph test and proves that he did not kill Katie.
Katie was shot and found in a ravine. Jimmy is very upset and is on a journey to find the killer. He must find the killer. As Sean interviews some of Katie's friends, they tell the cops that she had planned to go to Los Vegas with her boyfriend. Dave who is married to Celeste(Marcia Gay Harden) and has a son. Dave is still shaken because of the past abuse. He always seems confused and deep in thought.
Jimmy is a strong, angry man. He spent time in prison and it really made him hard. During through the entire movie, Sean recieves calls from his wife who he is separated from. He automatically knows it is her because she never speaks, and only Sean speaks. As the movie progresses, Dave is becoming a suspect. He came home very late with a bloody hand and claims to have killed someone. Even his wife thinks that he may of killed Katie. But the cops are still reluctant, and one of them pick up something interesting about that old message that those kids left, about the dead body they had found. They notice that the kids asked for HER name, the boys were upset and hung up. The police are very suspicious.
They find the boys, and it ends up to be Brendan(Katie's boyfriend)'s brother and friend. They had stolen a gun from the house and shot her..they were very scared and covered it up and did not want to get caught.
As the mystery is over, we see that Dave have been bait, he gets drunk with Jimmy and his friends. They decide to get some fresh air. Jimmy then asks if Dave killed Katie. Dave is confused. Jimmy tells him about Celeste telling him that he killed someone. Dave tells him that he was a child molester. Jimmy does not believe it at all. Eventually Jimmy kills him, believing that Dave has killed his daughter. As the movie ends, Sean's wife finally talks to him and they get back together with their daughter.
Sean tells Jimmy that he has found the killerS. Jimmy is confused. Sean asks Jimmy if he has seen Dave. He denies anything. Sean knows that Jimmy has killed him, but all he does is make a gun hand gesture at Jimmy and that is the end of the story.
This movie was great, I really enjoyed it. This movie had excellent casting. Sean Penn did an excellent job playing the emotional Jimmy. I recommend this movie 100%.
