My Life Without Me is a movie I watched a few days ago. I love to rent movies and this one has always caught my eye so I decided to rent it. I am glad I did. Sarah Polley, who plays in one of my favorite movies called White Lies, stars in My Life Without Me. This movie is Canadian.
Sarah Polley plays Ann. Ann is about 23 and is a janitor at a local college. She is married to Scott Speedman who plays Don. Don is unemployed most of the time, but is a loving father to Patsy and Penny, two darling girls. The family lives in a trailer, basically in Ann's mothers backyard. The depressing mother is played by Deborah Harry, who works as at a bakery. Ann's father is in jail and does not try to communicate with the family at all.
Ann is not feeling well lately, she is throwing up and feeling very dizzy. Her co-worker and friend, Laurie, who is played by Amanda Plummer, who has an obsession about losing weight. As Ann feels more and more sick, she decides to go get an ultrasound. The doctor, Dr.Thompson, played by Julian Richings, looks at the results of her ultrasound and is shocked and notices that she is not pregnant. Dr.Thompson takes the curious Ann to the hall and asks her many questions and finally tells Ann that she has cancer and only has two months to live. Ann is shocked but finally goes home and tells her husband that she has anemia.
Ann decides she needs to take control of her life since she does not have much time left. Ann goes to the local coffee shop and writes things she has to do before she dies. She must sleep with someone else to see what sex with another man is, drink and smoke as much as she wants,make tapes for her daughters for every birthday until they are 18, find Don a new husband and visit her father in jail. There is a curious man looking at Ann in the coffee shop.
She goes to a club, but gets bored and goes to do laundry and sees that man at the coffee shop doing his laundry as well. He introduces himself as Lee, and gets coffee for them but comes back to Ann fast asleep. She wakes in the morning and he gives her clean laundry and a book with his phone number in it. She decides to call him and they fall into love, they share a kiss in his car to music. She refuses to go to the hospital often because she does not want to make her family get involved. Not one person knows that she is going to die.
Ann meets Ann, a new neighbor in the town, Ann is a nurse and is great with Ann's kids. Ann considers this Ann could replace her.
Ann begins to tape birthday wishes to her daughters. Lee and Ann see each other and slowly fall in love. Ann is getting more and more sick. She gives Dr.Thompson a box of tapes and asks him to give them to her daughters and other people when she dies. He agrees.
Ann dies and the end of the movie you hear the tapes that she gave to everyone. Lee is hurt and sad that he lost her. The kids miss her, but have their new mom. Ann's mother decides to cheer up and go out more and the movie ends.
This is a wonderful movie. I really enjoyed it. The plot was simple, but I loved it. The acting was great. Sarah Polley is a wonderful actress. This movie is dramatic and sad but warms your heart.
I recommend this movie 100%.
