What happens when a fuddy-duddy Sarkaari organisation tries using technology that it seems to know absolutely nothing about?
I am an MTNL Broadband Internet user in Delhi. Of late, these low-tech babus have started using pop-ups to market their services. The problem is that our technologically challenged friends have no idea of how to deploy the technology properly. The result is that they score 10 out of 10 for Outright Intrusiveness and 0 out of 10 for User Experience.
Here’s how their pop-ups “work”. You launch your browser and go to Google, for example. Their pop-up loads and BLOCKS YOUR PAGE! Unbelievable! You have to dismiss the pop-up and then refresh the page.
Even when their silly pop-ups fail to load, they still block your page. So the start of every browsing experience and every time that you open a new browser window is always: Dismiss Pop-up-Refresh Page, Dismiss Pop-up-Refresh Page. again and again!
And it isn’t one solitary pop-up. No! Right now, there are three of them: one selling you a faster broadband connection, another asking you to opt for online billing and the third offering an anti-hacking solution.
My dear, dear MTNL – we all know you are terribly intimidated by this complicated new technology that upgrades to the next level even before you guys can catch up with the basics. But please – if you want to use smart online marketing tools, first learn how to deploy them properly… and without pissing off your customers.
