This film is not for everyone. In fact, as I watched it, I honestly wondered if it was even for me.

Academy Award Winner Monster Ball is a stiff film about a southern death row prison guard that starts to change. After a prisoners last walk is messed up by Hank’s (played by Billy Bob Thornton) brother, things start to really heat up between the two until the brother Sonny finally ends it in one emotional charged scene.

After this powerful blast of emotions, Hank starts to really change and ends up falling in love with Leticia (Halle Berry).

From start to finish

At the very start of the film, the viewer hears Hank throwing up. Then it moves into a slow, somewhat feeling of disjointed scenes.

This is one of those movies, that no matter how hard I want to like it, I just can’t seem to get into the swing of it.

One minute Hank is in an all night dinner eating ice cream, the next in a bar, and the next scene we’re watching a death row inmate saying good bye to his son and wife.

After these few scenes, things start to fall into place a little better with the inmate packing up his cell in preparation of making his final lonely walk to the cell that will hold him until he is electrocuted in the electric chair.

Meanwhile, we’re shown a scene where the wife and son are watching television as they wait for the final phone call. Nothing is said by either, in fact, if you have just tuned into the movie you would be totally lost as to how the two scenes even connect to one another.

In Conclusion

If you’re board, very board, or if you like these types of films then I say rent it or buy it. But, if you prefer something a little more connected then I would pass on this film. In the beginning of the film there is also a shot where a hooker is doing her John leaving nothing except maybe her feet to your imagination by the time the scene is finished. So you may want to consider who is around as you watch it.
