Park Street has been the scene of party goers, merry makers and gourmets in Kolkata for decades. It boasts to have some of the best restaurants in the city, with great ambience and great food. Be it Indian, Continental or Chinese cuisine, Park Street attracts a massive footfall each night. The restaurants are well suited to cater to both party boozers and family crowd. Mocambo, situated just off Park Street has been offering Continental and Indian delights to Kolkatans since the past twenty years or more. The restaurant has a rich heritage of providing some of the finest cuisines in this part of the country. Mocambo really stands out for the unique and quality spread of food it offers and also it's efficient service.
The main USP of a restaurant has to be it's food. And here, Mocambo stands out way ahead of it's competitiors. Let us have a look at some of the delicacies it offers:
Drinks: There are plenty of mocktails and soft drinks to choose from. Cocktails like Tom Collins, John Collins, Screwdriver etc are also available. Wines and other alcoholic drinks are also there on the menu in reasonable price.
Soups: There is a rich variety of Cream soups like, Cream of Chicken, Cream of Tomato, Cream of Mushroom, Cream of Asparagus. I recommend the Cream of Spring Chicken soup which I usually have. It is a thick soup with an amazing taste. One bowl is enough to serve two.
Special Dishes: Some of the special dishes in Mocambo make it stand out. For example:
Chicken Ala Kiev - This dish will just bowl you over. A huge deep fried greande of chicken served in a bed of mashed potatoes. The grenade is full of tender chicken braised in butter. It's served hot, so when you cut open the grenade the molten butter oozes out. Gives you a heavenly feeling altogether.
Devilled Crab: Two giant crab shells are filled with cheese and crab meat. You got to taste it to believe it. This dish is not available much elsewhere, and even though it is made, I doubt they can make it like Mocambo.
Chicken Steak Sizzler: This vintage steak dish is sure to make you glad. It will sizzle it's way to your table and along with the rich Chicken Steak experience will also allow you to get a taste of fried egg and assorted vegetables. Beaf Steak is also available and tasty, but Chicken Steak is tastier.
Grilled Fish: Continental at its best. A tender Bhetki or Hilsa fish grilled to perfection and celebrating the taste of goodness.
Mocambo also has a platter to keep our vegetarian friends happy. Brinjal Flourentine is a continental dish that you can definitely try out. In the Indian section, Paneer Lababdar and Tandori Roti/Naan might be a good option too.
Desserts and sweet dishes are good too! Choice of icecreams are available but what really stands out is the Chocolate Souffle. The excellent taste, the soft delight, the crisp choco chips, ahh, all take you to Cloud 9!
The service is excellent. Stewards are swift and professional. The only flip side is the waiting time to enter. You might have to wait for 30-40 minutes to enter if it is a holiday or a weekend. The number of tables is limited and space cannot be increased in recent future.
I have been to Mocambo multiple times. While in college and early working life, it was one of the favorite hang out place of me and my friends. I went there after a long time with my wife on last Valentine's Day. It was her first time, and for me it was revisiting the past and being nostalgic. We both loved the experience and it was really worth it. The food was also value for money. Our meal for two without drinks costed around 900 rupees, which is quite reasonable by today's standards.
I will recommend this place to all fellow Kolkatans and all my friends outside Kolkata too. Please enjoy the photos which I had taken!
