MMK College situated in Bandra West behind the famous National
College is one of the most preferred colleges for commerce by students
in the suburbs of Mumbai City. This equally famous college which was
started in the year 1961 is managed by the prestigious Hyderabad Sind
National Collegiate Board. Like all minority institutions in Mumbai,
the college has 50 pc of its seats reserved for the minority community,
in this case Sindhi Community. I do not belong to the minority
community but admission to the college was not all that tough since the
cut-off percentage for the general category is between 66-70 pc in SSC.
My name appeared in the first merit list and I took admission
immediately. I had got 75 pc in my SSC Boards.
The college is
affiliated to Mumbai University and the Maharashtra Board. It offers
various courses such as HSC (Commerce), B.Com, Bachelors of Management
Studies and B.Com (Banking and Insurance). The college also offers
add-on courses such as Foreign Trade, Travel and Tourism and
E-Commerce. Students can also pursue M.Com course here. I was a B.Com
student in the college and passed out last year with 65 pc. The college
was given B++ Grade by the NAAC.
The best part about the
college is its faculty. The college has extremely qualified and
experienced faculty who have the experience of teaching for more than
20-25 years. I personally liked the Economics Professors and my
favourite professors were Mrs. Arvind from the Junior College and Prof.
Iyer and Prof. Nachnani from the degree college, all of them teaching
economics. The Accountancy Faculty is the second best. The faculty is
approachable and is ready to answer all the queries of students. They
give useful tips which are relevant for examinations. Remedial Coaching
for weak students and extra lectures for bright students are carried
out.
There are many extra curricular activities such as Sports,
Fine Arts, Crafts, Dramatics, and Music. The college encourages its
students to participate in them and think beyond books. Many students
from MMK are in the profession of Modeling, Acting, Film-Making and
such other professions. Many students have also secured jobs in big
companies and multi-nationals. The college also participates in the
Economic Convention and organizes leadership camps. The college is also
active in charity work and has organized blood donation camps and
collected aid for the needy.
The college offers its students with the following facilities:
A Computer Lab – It is well equipped with latest computer hardware and software
A
Library – It has thousands of books on various subjects. They also keep
many newspapers and magazines, whenever I got bored I visted the
library and read all the magazines kept there.
A small canteen –
I never tasted food from here and only had tea or coffee. There are a
lot of places outside the college where one can hang out and eat. I
liked eating from Jai Sandwhichwalla and whenever I got time, I ate
Frankie Rolls from Quality Stores on Linking Road.
A gym – never used the facilities of gym so can’t comment on it.
Some
students have the myth that the exam papers set by the college are very
tough and the evaluation is done very strictly but this is not true.
Any student who is regular with her studies will be able to answer the
papers easily. The papers are set strictly as per university guidelines
and checked in an appropriate manner. Nowadays students are also
provided with the facility to see their corrected answer sheets so the
process is transparent.
I will add a bit of info which I
forgot earlier. Some students think that the college is a meeting
ground for young couples and come here to find a gf / bf. Some also
think that the college is a Marriage Bureau and they come here to find
themselves future brides and grooms. The college should take an
additional fee from these students. A word of warning for anyone who
wants to indulge in such behavior on the college premises BE prepared
to be chased by the peons and the security personnel. The students of
MMK are a mixed lot and it was a real fun going there.
Finally, I would advice anyone that they should seek admission into this college and their experience will definitely be good.
