“Falling in love is like being struck by lightning. You can no more make it strike you than you can avoid it.
--Indy (Sean Patrick Flannery) Young Indiana Jones Chronicles
“Minnale”( meaning: lightning) was a big hit when it was released…It is a simple love story .One of the reasons for its big success is its songs ..But then, is the album worth buying? Let us see…
- Azhagiya Theeye
Singer(s) : Harish Raghavendra ,Timmy
The situation is not new …The hero sees the heroine for the first time and it is love at first sight for him. The hero sings this song about how he feels about her .The lyricist Vaali ,I suppose must have been in the hospital while writing this song. He writes about hypertension, allergy etc.. It doesn’t matter whether these things make sense but then , when the tune is catchy , I think one doesn’t need to bother very much about lyrics being silly ….
2 . Vaseegara
Singer(s) : Bombay Jayashree
This is a masterpiece. It starts with a haunting flute piece ..The heroine realizes that she is in love with the hero and sings this song…It is about her demands and desires that she wants her lover to fulfill. There is a quote by Robert Frost that talks about the nature of love :” Love is an irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired “. This song, written by Thamarai brings out this tendency when you are in love…That is why I suppose the heroine wants full attention from her lover. Bombay Jayashree excels in this song with her husky voice and flawless rendition…The first time, I heard this song, and I thought it was composed by A R Rahman.. It might be because the orchestration in this song is very “Rahman”-ish ..
3 .Verenna Vendum
Singer(s) : Unnikrishnan ,Harini
This song has a simple tune with excellent vocals and very good orchestration . The lyrics are ok .. The heroine says that she is not sure about whether she is in love with the hero or not …As usual, our hero is pleading and trying to make her say “yes” to his proposal.
- Venmathiye Venmathiye
Singer(s) : Roopkumar Rathod, Tippu
Amazing song !!! The situation is this : The hero even though he is love with the heroine , is forced to forget her ..But he is not able to get her out of her mind…He tries to convince himself that he is not losing anything if she doesn’t love him...But then, he is constantly reminded of her .So during the course of this song, he constantly shifts between love and hatred. So, even though he says that he wants to forget her totally ,he still talks about the good times he spent with her..Vaali is an expert in writing such songs and he excels in this song too.
- Ore Nyabagam.
Singer (s) : Devan
This is a short, but a sweet song.. Devan has done a great job in this song.. The background for this song is such that it doesn’t distract us from the tune. The situation is this : The heroine refuses to see the hero and the hero is forced to go back without seeing her .I particularly liked these lines :
“ Iru Vizhi Unathu Imaigalum Unathu
Kanavugal Mattum Enathe Enathu ”.
It roughly means this : The hero says that “ You are the owner of my eyes(and you know that too)..But my dreams(about you) are mine and you cannot take it away from me!!”. I am reminded of this quote from an unknown source :” I know in reality we can't be together, so I just close my eyes and you're right here with me... in my dreams you're mine forever..”. The lyrics echo this feeling/sentiment.
6.. Oh Mama Mama
Singer(s) : Shankar Mahadevan , Tippu
It has become customary to have a song about guys having fun and having a carefree attitude towards life in almost every Tamil film and this film is no exception to it ..It goes without saying that it has to be song written in tanglish(Tamil+English)…This trend was popularized by A R Rahman and Harris Jeyaraj has adopted it from him. The lyrics are not very important for such a song and it would be better if I don’t comment about it !
Overall , a very good album which is worth buying!
