Define Democracy. A government which is run of the people, for the people and by the people is called Democracy. We choose the people who have been disappointing us for the last six decades & all they have done is secured their own careers with much better prospects than any other profession would have given them.
Once almost everyone use to cast their vote. But present day's scenario says that majority of people have lost interest in the leaders & have stopped voting, but still a good percentage of people do vote & continue to elect people with different names but with same attitude / motive / agenda.
The standards Yash Raj Films has been quite similar to the status of democracy. There was a time when almost everyone use to rush to the theaters when ever heir film was released & now a majority of people have lost their faith in the banner hence prefer to stay away from their films. But still a certain group continues to watch their films, get fooled but still appreciates their product by highlighting some of the positives & concealing all the negatives.
So YRF product too can be defined as - A film made of & by YRF banner, for the YRF die hard fans only. This is to say the least after watching their latest product 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan', which is full of confused characters & a story that has nothing new to offer except the forced twists, which are as useful as a blanket could be during peak summer.
Confused # 1 - Ali Zafar, settled in London after having a break up with his girl friend of 5 years, decides to have an arranged marriage & asks his brother Imran Khan based in India to search a girl for him. His parents are alive, but he wants his brother to find a girl for him. But he still misses his girl friend & loves her a lot.
Confused # 2 - Imran Khan, agrees to search a girl for his brother & after some of the boring scenes where he meets girls & parents that 75 percent people will reject finally gets a call from Kanwaljeet Singh, who wants them to visit their house to see their daughter. Selects Katrina for Ali but falls in love with her. He doesn't realise that but his friends do.
Confused # 3 - Katrina Kaif, a girl who has lived life to fullest wants to have an arranged marriage because she is almost 27 & her parents want her to get married. so she is ready. But hold on, she & Imran Khan are not strangers, they have met 5 years ago. She agrees for marriage but falls for Imran.
Confused # 4 - Tara D'souza, Ali Zafar's girl friend, who after break up with Ali Zafar vanishes from the scene only to reappear post interval session to give a predictable end to the film. because she misses Ali and keeps sending him SMS.
Confused Group - families of Imran & Katrina Kaif. None of the family member could make out what was cooking between Imran & Katrina. There was only one person in both the families who was sensible & he was mentally retarded brother of Katrina Kaif. Now how confusing is that for a viewer?
After a video conference call with Ali Zafar where she asks some silly questions, Katrina says yes for marriage. Ali Zafar says 'yes' too. Arrangements are in progress for the marriage. Ali Zafar arrives India for the marriage and the film nose dives towards abyss. Because suddenly 48 hours before the marriage both Imran & Katrina realises that they love each other. How to stop the marriage? The sequences that follow will force you to pull you hair down. And trust me, if your really start pulling your hair, by the time the end credits starts rolling, you'll be almost bald.
Music is passable as it is with the tune of the film but you don't remember any song after you have left the theater.
Dialogues are average. Photography is good.
Kanwaljeet Singh & Parikshit Sahni are ok. Though the former tries to talk like Sanjeev Kumar at times.
Debutant Tara D'souza as Ali's girl friend is strictly ok. Ali Zafar's performance is mixed bag as it varies between average to good.
Imran Khan is good. At least we can see sign of improvement in his performance.
If there is anything that is the life of the film, she is Katrina Kaif. She is electrifying and has performed so well that she is most likely to get at least the Filmfare award for sure.
Debutant Ali Abbas Zafar has taken two additional responsibilities besides writing & directing the film, which seems to be too much for a debutant as he hardly succeeds in any of the four departments. He did try to make a different film but unfortunately could not succeed. Though there are some light moments but they are very few. But YRF have approved his talent & YRF fans are appreciating his efforts. Pathetic time for films.
I am not against Yash Raj Films. I have a lot of respect for this banner that is why I watch almost every film made by them, but the films that they have produced at regular intervals have been very disappointing.
My rating - 2 stars (1 for the film & 1 extra for Katrina's performance)
