Originality:

Though the Hindi film ''Meera'' is a pretty old film but the combination of Gulzar as the Director, Hema Malini in the Name Role and Pandit Ravi Shankar as the Music Director made this product worthy of the gods. Most of the compositions of the legendary saint/poetess Meerabai have been featured in the film with a different but amazingly catchy rustic flavour. The mellifluous voice of Vani Jairam has added lustre to the lyrics of Meerabai and the music of Pandit Ravi Shankar. If I can remember correctly, Vani Jairam had hogged the limelight with her Guddi song ''Bol Re Papihara'' and then disappeared into oblivion, only to be resurrected by her remarkable playback in this film. It is indeed a pity that we do not get to her more often.

Coming back to the album, I can safely say that it is at its melodious best, under the creative wand of Pt. Ravi Shankar. It is our misfortune that his genius is restricted to a very few such films only, like Pather Paanchali, Apur Sansar in Bengali and Anuradha in Hindi in addition to the film under review. Most of the tunes are set apart from the conventional ones, sung earlier by artistes of rare eminence, such as Pandit Onkar Nath Thakur, D V Paluskar and M S Subbulaxmi.

I have always enjoyed the Bhajans contained in this album and would like people to hear this one to appreciate good music.
