I have only myself to blame, for I got myself duped due to the village backdrop of this particular movie. Off late, I have watched quite a few movies with village backdrop turning out to extremely good in more than one ways. Subramaniapuram, Vennila kabadi kuzhu, parutheeveeran to name a few.
Mayandi kudumbathar, at best can be described as a collection of incidents, which is connected by excessive amounts of tears, few great performances, a hero as clueless as his expressions and the stereotyped villagers.
I was reminded of few of the movies from 80s and early 90s where the step mother illtreats the children from the guys first marriage or a son with more money favourably treated etc.Well at least this aspect of the movie makes us laugh.
Now to the story(if at all any). There is an extremely happy bunch of 4 brothers with Mayandi(actor manivannan, one of the saving graces of the movie) as their father. They are so good to each other, so really caring and compromising for each other, helping each other out and end up bashing anyone who tells anything wrong about their father. Apparently Mayandi has a brother, who in turn has 5 bad asss sons, and also a sister, with a scapegoat of a daughter( for what else to marry the hero of course).
We are shown the animosity between mayandi and his bro, coz mayandi took away the bros share and gave it to the sis. Time and again, mayandi's and his bros sons beat the hell out of each other only for mayandi to broker peace between them. There are scenes where our hero expresses his( you can identify his expressions only based on the expressions of others and the music) love to another gal through his face(oh my god dont curse me for lying), and of course there are scenes where the semi-evil sisters in law of the hero spit venom(on both the hero and their dad). We are also given to understand that it is only the hero that has studied till 12th and joins an Engineering college, funded by the land that his father sold
All is well(not for the viewers) when all of a sudden mayandi passes away due to an electric shock, and almost immediately the house is broken to pieces with the sisters in law asking for a wealth split, the sister and her husband coming for a split in the wealth too, the hero brokering peace and what it ends up is an extremely emotional( and very funny for viewers) scene.
I do not wish to elaborate any further on this. Many may wonder as to why something which makes some sense as a story is being criticized by me so much. The answer is simple, the movie does not depict these in a way which makes sense, as my writing may have.
The best part is that towards the end, our hero has completed engineering and gets job in an organization with his own cabin the very first day of joining:) man I pity the software guys who work their asses out to sit in cubicles lol.
The other irritating part of the movie is the amount of tears that comes out of the characters. It could be as much as that of last year's rain in chennai! Someone who is shown as a bad asss in front of confronting bad guys is shown as a tender person in reality( this too is just my assumption, not sure if the director meant that).
What about music by sabesh murali, there is a tearjerking song which keeps running in the background each time an emotional scene happens( now u understand how I got the meaning of the hero's expressions). You lend a ear properly(unless you are already asleep) you will hear the background score from Om Shanti Om playing as the background here too. Brothers in arms hence brothers in plagiarism too(they are Devas brothers).
Nothing that I could have done, as a hardcore movie buff, I could not stop the movie in between, not coz I liked it so much, I just wanted to know how much more pathetic it can get.
Sorry for praising this movie so much, but I could not find words that would correctly present the essence( god forgive me again) of this master piece.
PS: Mani vannan and pon vannan are very good actors, and have done their part to the T
cheers! unfortunately I cant say have fun:)
