Seasons may change, but not love. People may change but not fate. When we heed to the will of the universe we say it is our destiny and when we take courage and change it we live a life of our dreams for us and for others!
Mausam is an attempt to bridge the art and commercial genres, a difficult task. In the attempt, the artistic elements block the road of entertainment for the commercial film where the commercial elements feather and cover the art factor out of immediate visibility. Wished the writer director chooses a genre and permit the baby love to grow up in that genre.
The character establishment in the first season was much better where rest of the seasons were total disappointment. Situations were not tailor made to suites the seasons and failed to create the feel of the season in all four. Repetition of situations or turn of events made the story predictable which in turn made the film a torture after the second season. Unexplained running away seasons didn't help. The writer took a lot of cinematic liberty, which is not a reason for pride for a film which claims some art element in it. The last two seasons were a poor show. The writer in Pankaj Kapoor failed first and the director didn't attempt to improve on that.
Shahid Kapoor is natural and very good in the first half where he disappoints in his looks and acting in the second half. Sonam Kapoor shies a bit in the first half performance but does much better in the second half and even overshadows. The romance between the pair never blossoms and no wonder they failed the chemistry test and the quarterhearted lip locking test which backfired. One other performance I remember is from the actress who portrayed the sister of Shahid's character, even though her presence was very small.
Music is very good. Lyricist did a good job as well. Choreography is average. Then, the excess presence of music has a contribution to the total length of the film which failed the end product.
Cinematography is very good. Beauty of nature is well captured. However what fails the cinematography from excellence is the instability in reflecting seasons. Here the cinematographer could have help the director and even art director to make necessary changes in passing the season to the audience. The movie fails to give the seasonal experience but a general feeling of good images.
Editing is one department which failed the film big time. The fine balance of time is missing in the hands of editor in this film.
There are few moments from the film which are brilliantly shot, then one particular shot is still haunting me and simply excellent. In scotland, after reunion, Harry & Aayat (Shahid and Sonam) passes through a road where in the window a waiting woman is seen visible. After few scenes, Aayat reaches to the same sutuations and how we can forget the first scene? It is moment of the film.....which worth a film and more.
On the positive side, the film has certain excellent thoughtful situations, some good visuals and performance. On the negative side the writing is weak and situations are repetitive and thereby predictable, excessive length and moreover not so appealing romance and second half. Then, the attempt is noble one and even at its failure it helps a purpose which deserves applauds.
My rating 2.5 stars.
