I bought a Maruti Zen Petrol LXi in November 2004. I have driven it about 2,000 kms in 3 months and I am very happy with it.
After driving a Palio for 2 years, we bought the Zen as a second car. At first, I thought I was driving a toy car. It was less spacious than the Palio, the controls seemed sort of odd and too loose and it just looked tiny.
I am slowly falling in love. It's a great car - great pickup and smooth handling, amazing response to the lightest of pressures on the accelerator, superb power steering and very light on its feet. Its ability to squeeze into small spaces for parking and maneouvre through traffic, great turning radius and swivel and its zippiness are great.
The mileage looks great after the extravagantly poor mileage of the Palio (which gives 8-9 km/lit) . The Zen gives me 11 km/lit easy in the city and at least 13 km/lit on the expressway.
It is not as roomy as the Palio, the bootspace is non-existent and the interiors are a little tacky and plasticky if you are travelling with the family. But when you are the sole passenger in the driver's seat, it's a joy.
I recommend the Zen heartily to young couples with no kids or one kid, to folks who drive out of the city on weekends and to people who have no great need for a large bootspace.
