Who says size does not matter? Step into the interiors of an SX4 and you'll realize how small a Skoda Octavia really is!

I don't know if it's just me, but when you're spending nearly a million bucks(Rs. 10, 00, 000) on a car, you DO expect it to be every thing. And that means you expect: luxury, comfort, styling, cabin space, boot space, safety features, hi quality entertainment, status value, etc. etc. etc.

Read that again: You expect EVERY thing. And, that's what the SX4 gives you!

Compare it to the others in its segment, and every thing falls short. The Verna is the zippiest of the lot, but its boot is smaller than a Swift's. The old City has simply nothing else going for it except for its high price tag and "premium" positioning. The Ford Fiesta. well, who buys a Ford?! The Aveo is quite a neat package in all respects, but there's nothing exceptional about it. The new City has fixed all the old City's shortcomings, but is less roomier than the SX4 and costs 1.5 lacs more!

The big pros?

  • Cabin space: Very very generous.(even better than some next-segment cars!)

  • Ride quality: Outstanding(thanks to a great suspension and handling)

  • Pickup: Surprisingly perky!(try it. you'll be surprised!)

  • Mileage: Really good(10-11 kmpl in city and 15-17 on highways)

  • Engine: Refined(only Maruti and Honda offer this quality of refinement)

  • Styling: Well, this is a personal choice but I love its macho looks

Plus, there’s a lot of stuff that makes it a sheer pleasure to drive.

  • The automatic climate control . looks good and works effectively without a fuss

  • The in-dash 2-din music system with steering controls and 6 speakers sound great

  • The lighting on the cockpit controls looks so much like a BMW's!

  • Ground clearance of 190 mm is SUV class - a must for indian potholes and speedbreakers!

  • 2 airbags and a host of safety features keep you safe inside

I’ve previously owned a Swift, a Wagon R and a Tata Indica. And, I thought the ride quality of the Swift was superb. until I drove an SX4!

Any complaints?

(As on March 2009) It's now been more than 5, 000 kms in my new SX4, but I have no major complaints, except for this:

I am taller than most people(6.2 ft) and find the headrests on the rear seats are not very comfortable. If I were nitpicking, I'd also say the ticking sound you hear when the turn indicator is on, is a bit softer than I'd like, making me sometimes forget that the turn indicator has been left on. And, I miss the rear wiper and washer from my Swift days - something that comes in handy on a bad monsoon day in Mumbai.

There is one more thing. the size and shape make it difficult to rear park the car without sensors. I've fixed that problem by getting four sensors(Xenos) installed. Now, I get audible and visual alerts on the distance to park, right inside my rear-view mirror!

In conclusion.

Feels like an SUV, handles like a small car, and offers comfort comparable to the best of the lot. Don't forget, this is the car that made Honda take notice and revamp its no-frills City. And, it's still 1.5 lacs cheaper than the new City!

Since purchasing my SX4, I've also seen the new Honda City and it looks stunning from the outside(especially the front grille)! I am disappointed, of course, by the plasticky tacky dashboard on the interior - my good ol' Indica had better looking controls. If only it had the cockpit of the Civic, I wouldn't mind paying the extra dough to get one. Until then, I think the SX4 makes for a far more sensible choice.
