Prior to the release of Chashme Baddoor last year, Director David Dhawan admitted that he was nervous before the film went on floors as the film was devoid of his three favourite stars – Govinda, Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan. One year later, David Dhawan is back with another comedy, Main Tera Hero, which again doesn’t feature his three favourites (although Salman is present in a small way) and just like Chashme Baddoor, Main Tera Hero is a hilarious ride and proves that David need not always incorporate his favourite actors in the film. His execution and his excellent team of writers are enough to take the film to dizzying heights. And moreover, this time he has Varun Dhawan, who is guaranteed to win every viewer’s heart!
The story of the movie: Shreenath Prasad(Varun Dhawan) aka Seenu lives with his parents in Ooty. He’s terrible in studies and is notorious for his mischievous behavior. After being taunted by his father(Manoj Pahwa), Seenu decides to go to Bangalore for higher studies. In college, he comes across Sunaina(Ileana DCruz) and falls for her. By doing so, he gets into the bad books of Angad Bedi(Arunoday Singh). But Seenu is sharp and successfully thwarts Angad and his attempts to defeat him. However, the real trouble begins when Aisha(Nargis Fakhri) springs from nowhere and falls in love with Seenu.
The best part of Main Tera Hero is the manner in which it’s promoted. The promos never gave an idea of the actual premise of the film, but at the same time didn't mislead as well. And hence, Main Tera Hero is unpredictable in a way and this adds to the fun. Also, the twists and turns in the film are clever and indeed surprise viewers. For instance, when Angad goes on a flashback mode during the intermission point, one expects a predictable story to unfold but, surprise! The twist in the tale is bound to catch one unawares! Similarly, a pleasant and a hilarious surprise lie in store when the light goes off in a sequence in the second half!
The first half is fast-paced and extremely hilarious and funny. The fun continues in the second half as well. However, some of the ideas executed by Seenu and the manner in which he gets successful are too convenient and hence a bit unconvincing. Also, the manner in which Angad gets fooled almost every time gets repetitive after a point and hence loses the charm. Moreover, the ‘devious’ plan hatched by Angad in the pre-climax is totally nonsense! Thankfully, these are minor glitches in the otherwise entertaining film.
Main Tera Hero boasts of some great actors and performances but Varun Dhawan takes the cake. He’s a complete superstar material! It’s no easy task to play the massy hero so convincingly despite the chocolate hero looks and despite being so new in the industry. But Varun pulls it off very well in all departments, be it comedy, romance, dance, action and even emotional sequences. At this rate, Varun will soon be the next BIG star of our industry!
Ileana DCruz looks stunning and delivers a lovely and sincere performance. Her first two Hindi films didn’t give her a chance to exhibit her hot side and she gets an opportunity to do so in Main Tera Hero and makes good use of it! Nargis Fakhri doesn't get much scope to showcase her acting skills but is fine and does manage to entertain. Arunoday Singh is just terrific. He suits the role completely and raises tons of laughs with his antics. An actor to watch out for! Anupam Kher (Vikrant) is damn funny and is bound to raise laughs, especially his ‘echo-effect’. Rajpal Yadav (Angad’s aide) highly entertains, reminding one of his performances in Hungama, Waqt, Chup Chup Ke etc. Hope he continues to entertain us with such performances! Saurabh Shukla(Ballu) steals the show with his hilarious act! Watch out! Evelyn Sharma (Veronica) is sizzling and has her moments. Other actors of the film – Manoj Pahwa, Supriya Shukla (Seenu’s mother), Shireesh Sharma (Sunaina’s father), Raju Kher (Seenu’s teacher), Shakti Kapoor, Ashwin Mushran (anger management teacher) and the actor playing Seenu’s roommate – too give a good performance. And lastly, Salman Khan entertains a lot with his mere voiceover!
Sajid-Wajid’s music is peppy and energetic and in sync with the film’s mood. The four songs of the film – Palat, Besharmi Ki Height, Galat Baat Hai and Shanivaar Raati – are neatly incorporated in the film. Also, the songs are very well shot and hence don’t act as obstacles. Sandeep Shirodkar’s background score compliments the music score very well. Sanjay F Gupta’s cinematography is effective. Sukant Panigrahy’s sets are appealing. Action is not over-the-top and hence works well.
Tushar Hiranandani’s story and screenplay are quite funny and well etched out. The film is a remake of the Telugu hit Kandireega and the changes made in the Hindi version make for a great watch. Milap Zaveri’s dialogues are hilarious. The writer outdoes himself. In fact, for a moment, I thought it is Sajid-Farhad who has penned the dialogues! And lastly, David Dhawan beautifully directs the film in his trademark style. And as always, he adds the naughty touch in his film but ensures he doesn't cross the line even once. Hence, the film is a complete family entertainer. There are flaws in the second half which could have been avoided. Nevertheless, one is guaranteed to come out of the theatre with a smile or guffaw!
Some of the best scenes:
1.Seenu on his way to Bangalore
2.Seenu meets Sunaina for the first time
3.The drama at the canteen
4.Seenu meets Angad
5.Seenu romances with Sunaina
6.Seenu at Angad’s residence
7.The intermission point
8.Seenu sings song for Bholenath
9.All songs of the film
10.Light goes off
11.The last 15 minutes
On the whole, Main Tera Hero is a laugh riot that is guaranteed to raise lot of laughs in theatres. It also stands out, thanks to some unpredictable moments and Varun Dhawan’s outstanding performance! Songs are neatly incorporated and there’s not a single dull moment in the 128 minute long film! The film hasn't taken a huge opening but here’s hoping the positive word of mouth of the film helps the movie attain commercial success, which it fully deserves!
My rating- 3.5/5.
