Madan Mohan Kohli, better known as Madan Mohan. This handsome man after completing study joined Indian army and after world war 2 left army for music. He basics of classical music at lahore but did not receive any formal training in music. Haath mein bandook ki jagah le li saaj ne aur ek naya aayam likhne sangeet ki duniya mein aa gaye.
During Madan Mohan's short stint as assistant to S. D. Burman the latter used a tune originally composed by Madan Mohan. This was the song 'Mera sundar sapna beet gaya'(Do Bhai). It is also suggested that the song 'Jeevan ke safar mein rahi' (Munimji) was a Madan Mohan composition as he was assistant for Munimji as well (Munimji was delayed in release and the music was recorded well before 1955). However this has not been substantiated.
Filmography: I would like to select only those which I remember and liked and considered to be all time hist are listed below:
Madhosh (1951) - Meri yaad mein tum na aansoo bahana - this was his first superhit song sung my Talat Mehmood.Railway platform (1955) - Chand maddham hai aasman chupp hai - Lata and Basti Basti parwat parwat gaata jaaye banjara - Rafi. Ye do gaane mere dil ke andar bas gaye hain
Bhai bhai (1956) - Ae dil mujhe bata de - Geeta Dutt, wow, dil jhoom jata hai ise sunn kar.
Samundar (1957) - Aaja kahin se aaja dil ka qarar leke, baithe huye hai kab se tera intezar leke. I can say from here Lata ke gayaki mein ek alag baat nazar aane lagi aur in dono ka saath superhit formula ban gaya. One more thing, if I remmber correctly, the, opening music of this song was used as title music for a program called Bhoole bisre geet or Shirshak Sangeet broadcast by Radio Ceylone.
Gateway of India (1957) - Do ghadi wo jo paas aa baithe, hum zamane se door ja baithe - Koi shabd nahi hai mere paas is gaane ke badayee ke liye.
Dekh Kabira roya (1957) - A super hit musical film- Hum se aaya na gaya tum se bulaya na gaya aur Meri veena tum bin roye, just unforgettable songs.
Adalat (1958) - Hothon ko see chuke to zamane ne ye kaha, ye chupp si kyon lagi hai aji kuchh to boliye, Madan Mohan aur Lata ji peak par aa gaye.
Jailor (1958) - Hum pyar mein jalne walon ko - kisi ko chain nahi aaya ye sun ne ke baad, bas sunte hi rahe yahi dil chahta hai.
Aakhri dao 1958) - Tujhe kya sunaoon ae dilruba - My favorite.
Mohar (1959) - Tum ho saath raat bhi haseen hai, ab to maut ka bhi gamnahi hai. Picturised on Geeta Bali sung by none other than Lata. Here too, opening music was used for program - Meri Pasand (Anchor’s choice) broadcasted from Radio Ceylone. Is gaane ko sun ke aisa lagta hai ki raat mein koi caarvan ja raha ho registaan mein.
Anpadh (1962) - Although, Aap ki nazron ne samjha was superhit, but I like, Jiya le gayo ji mora sanwariya more, why, I don’t know.
Sharabi (1964) - This ultimate no was picturised in a go with some pegs on, I am not sure everyone knows this song but I like it for obvious reason - Sawan ke mahine mein, ek aag si seene mein, lagti hai to pee leta hoon, do chaar ghadi ji leta hoon.
Woh kaun thi (1964) - is film ka kaun sa gana achchha nahi tha kehna musqil hai. Very fe people knows that, when music was ready for son, ’’Naina barse’’ and producer was in hurry to picturised this song, but Lata ji was having a shore throat. Then Madan Mohan sung this song in his voice and Sadhna gave lip sync. Later on LAta ji sung this song and dubbing was done. I have this rare no. sung by Madan Mohan in my collection.
Aap ki parchayiyan (1964) - Agar mujhse mohabbat hai, excellent composition.
Haqeekat (1964) - Superb movie, superb song - Main ye soch kar uske dar se utha tha, Kar chale hum fida jaan-o-tan sathinyon, Zara si aahat hoti hai to, Khelo na mere dil se - Rula dete hain ye gaana, aur kya boloon.
Mera saaya (1966) - Mera faorite ekdum hat ke wala gana, lagta nahi hai Madan Mohan ji ka hai - Jhoomka gira re - Bas lagta hai abhi kadam uth padenge naachne ke kiye.
Dastak (1970) - Is film ke gaane aaj bhi dil par dastak dete hain - Mayi re, main ka se boloon (both version) aur Bainyan na dharo o balma.
Heer Ranjha (1970) - A classic Heer sung by Lata and all time hit by Rafi saab - Ye duniya ye mehfil mere kaam ki nahi. (My favorite). Other two song was also verypopular - Tere kuche mein tera diwana (was not put in the film) and Milo na tum to hum ghabraye, milo to aankh churayen.
Laila Majnu (1976) - Koi patthar se na maare mere diwane ko, Log aaj bhi phool barsate hain is film ke sabhi gaano par.
Mausam (1976) - Is film ke gaano ke liye dil dhoonta phir hai sahi shabd.
Veer Zara (2004) - I have not heard all songs of this film, just one - ’’Tere liye’’ and tha also because its tune was made during rehersal for ’’Dil dhoondta hai’’. There was two different tune for Dil dhoondta hai, one was used for Mausam and another was used for ’’Tere liye’’. I have recording of these two version with me.
Sorry can not cover all songs, but you can see most of his songs on you tube.
