This was the first and the last book of Jackie Collins that I read, such was the revulsion the book created in my mind for the author. I found the book to be written in bad taste and had cheap thrills for the namesake of a storyline. The book is about high profile people of Los Angeles caught in the world of drugs, sex and power. The book comes in four parts Power, Obsession, Murder and Revenge.
The Plot: The book starts with the introduction of one Mr X who hires call girls for a night and then murders them after he is satisfied (Do I see some of you already feeling disgusted). The protagonist of the story Madison Castelli is a journalist for a high profile magazine ''Manhattan Style. Though its not her field of interest and expertise but she is sent to L.A. to interview Freddie Leon a power broker in Hollywood who has the best of the stars signed up for his agency. In the same flight is a well-known T.V. personality Salli Turner a sex symbol in Hollywood. Somehow Salli and Madison are introduced to each other and Madison promises to take her interview. Meanwhile the mysterious Mr X goes about killing more call girls. On reaching L.A Madison puts up with her friend Natalie whose gay brother is a personal trainer of Max Steele, Freddie Leon's partner. Through Natalie's brother Madison arranges an interview with Max as she finds out that Freddie is accessible to no one. Meanwhile she goes and interviews Salli and talking to her she realises that Salli is not a bad person after all.
Twist in the tale: Within hours of the interview, Salli is murdered though Madison doesn't know about it. When Madison comes to know about it she takes it on her shoulders to find out the murderer of her new found friend.
The suspense: Now Max Steele has a friend who keeps showing up out of nowhere unnecessarily in the story and is shown to be a drug addict and a spoilt brat. We still innocently wonder who the pervert Mr X is and who is the guy who murdered Salli hoping that the author would have a better surprise for us. We are made to believe that any one of Freddie Leon, Max Steele and some other characters may be the murderer.
Why I read it???? People say you reap what you sow. I guess I've tortured so many of you with my reviews that this was the punishment God chose for me that I read this book by Jackie Collins to completion, or maybe I was the chosen one by God to save you all from the wrath of this book. Not even halfway through the book, I felt like giving up (or was it throwing up) but I had no other book in hand to read so I kept reading hoping and praying that the book would get better towards the end. But when it didn't happen I for the heck of it thought of just finishing it off and so I did only to regret later
