KORIGAD Height: 3049 feet. Location: Situated in the Paun Maval area this fort is in close vicinity of the well known sahara project amby valley. This fort can be easily accessed from Mumbai as well as pune. From Mumbai or pune one must get by rail to Lonavala. From lonavala S.T. stand the first bus for Ambavane leaves at 9:15 am in the morning. About 1:15 hours bus journey takes us to Peth-Shahapur which is the base village of this fort. Route: From Peth-Shahapur a broad well trodden trail leads to the top of the fort within 45 minutes. The route being an easy one finally leads to a flight of steps to the top. One can also approach the fort from Ambavae village, village just ahead of Peth-Shahapur, however this route is not the traditional route to the top. Highlights: Ganesh darwaja half way to the top with idol of Lord Ganesh hewn in the rock. Dughai cave near the ganesh darwaja. Six cannons on the fort. Korai devi temple. Shiv temple. Fort walls and the armoured bastions. Deepmal in front of korai temple. A huge central pond on the fort and another small pond.small caves with ganesh tank. Stepping down in ganesh tank one can see idol of ganesh in it. History: Origin of the fort is still debated. In 1657 shivaji took control of this fort. In 1818 marathas lost it to the british. Approximate time required from base to base is about 2.5 hours. One can easily cover either Tung fort or Tikona fort the same day.
