I went to see a Hindi film, called KOI MIL GAYAafter a very long time, i.e. after LAGAAN in a remote theatre called R- World. While the Hall and its ambience really impressed me, the film did not. Had the film retained its theme truly as a Fantasy film, I believe the outcome would have been just superb. But our box office considerations probably propelled the makers of the film to include all the MASALA ingredients in the said film. Suddenly you find that our child hero becomes a superhero and in true Hindi filmi style exhibits all his superpowers to have his way against the bad men in the film and do certain things which are just not possible humanly.

But then, was he not blessed with superpowers by our alien friend JADU?

I personally believe that the role of the alien could have been limited to a short span where the children are made to fly and basket the ball innumerably to emerge victorious in the last moment.

We all had our primary story telling lessons from our grand parents in the form of fables and fantasies. It is really a pleasure to get an opportunity at an advanced age to return to that experience. However, our filmmakers believe that only a right concoction prepared out of love, mystery, villainy, sentiments, glamour, sex etc. is the only way to attract people; and unfortunately, they are right as the box office result of this particular film has proved.

A serious viewer would however not be able to appreciate such a product. I felt a bit let down by the second half of this film.

Before closing, I must appreciate the fantastic performances of Hritik Roshan and also that of Rekha, who was subdued and absolutely natural to the core. The villains were really difficult to stand, not because of their performances, but in spite of it. Our friend JADU was good, but I felt his mannerisms resembled those of Johny Lever, who was as usual loud and irritating. Preity Zinta hardly had any significant role to display her talents. So she displayed her legs and her bare back instead, to probably add the glamour element.

I wish, some film maker shows the courage and conviction to produce a purely fantasy film, sans all the routine masala elements. There are a lot of talented artistes who can do justice to such roles.
