I was looking forward to King of Kotha because the trailer looked quite slick and stylish. But sadly, the actual movie was a big letdown. The story and screenplay were very weak. The plot kept jumping all over the place and it was hard to follow what was happening.
Dulquer Salmaan looked good and acted okay enough but his character was poorly written, with no depth or backstory. The supporting cast like Suresh Gopi were wasted in forgettable roles. The heroines Aditi Rao Hydari and Namita Pramod had nothing substantial to do.
The first half was still bearable but the film fell apart in the second half with a disjointed narrative and illogical scenes. The climax was abrupt and unsatisfying. For a mass action film, the action sequences fell flat and lacked impact due to weak direction and editing.
The locations and production design looked good but could not compensate for the movie's flaws. The songs were mediocre and did not help the pacing. Overall, King of Kotha felt like a half-baked film that did not do justice to its potential.
I wish they had spent more time polishing the script and developing the characters better. This could have been a slick gangster movie. Unfortunately, sloppy writing and direction ruined the experience for me. I expected much better from Dulquer coming after Kurup. But King of Kotha is a big disappointment compared to his other Malayalam movies. I would not recommend watching it unless you are a huge Dulquer fan.
