Khoya Khoya Chand, the title of the film fits her perfectly. I'll tell you how.
The film is murky in the beginning, just like on a cloudy night, women on Kadva Chauth go on to
their terraces waiting in desperation to get a glimpse at their'chand' and fail miserably and get
tired, thats exactly how you try to figure out, in which direction this movie is exactly going in. Then
you spot the'chand' and you see a story, the real acting now coming forth in its entirety, the plot is
now unraveling, and then comes the abrupt end and the'chand' gets shrouded in clouds again.
And here you are disappointed, as the job is done. The women have seen the chand, and they return to their homes, But we as an audience are taking a memory with us, so years later we can remember it and call it a selfish adventure by Sudhir Mishra who chose an actress that didn't really fit the bill.
There are glimpses of her acting in Rang de basanti, yes. But the passion, the talent of an experienced actress is nowhere to be seen, for to play an actress who did a myriad roles of fantastic women of yore, in bollywood, required screen presence. Required *finesse.
This movie, Khoya Khoya Chand begins on a false note. It is a young lady's attempt to walk in high
heeled shoes, which she tries on the first time, then after the interval, seems to get her act finally
right. And then falls abruptly, right down on her face. The only one hurt here is the audience.
What do you watch it for: Old 70s sets, clothing, and a numerous episodes of a hundred actresses
who lived in that bygone era, Seems like Soha is playing them all, the beautiful Madhubala, with the puncture in the heart, The drunkard Meena Kumari, and the aspiring Waheeda Rehman, and a few more, if I missed any.
Music: There seems to be only one song, that seems to be playing in the background for ages.
The plot: All the gossips of the 50s and 60s, all here.
Acting:
Poor Shiney, performed really well, but it wasn't his fantastic act. His previous films were decidedly
awesome.
Soha Ali Khan, well, I hate to admit it, but no girl its not happening, you got a chance to star in the movie, which seemd to be made exclusively for you, but it just didn't click, you need more persevereance, a la Aishwarya Rai. Currently I think, your role could have been performed really well, by Sanjida, from the Sanjida and Aamir pair from Nach Baliye, real easily. But hey, don't lose heart, keep trying, till you succeed.
Rajat Kapur: Was alright, same old thing.
All in all this movie was a disappointment. You needn't spend 150 bucks at all, like I did on this
movie, which I badly wanted to see, only to return with a stunned look and grimacing faces of those
who turned up, around 20 in a plush INOX theatre, and come to think of it, Vidhu Vinod Chopra
actually called it fantastic, he wasn't looking at the content at all then, he just woke up after the
interval, and saw the best part, and left only after that, boy.some people can really fake with their
advice to go and watch some stupid movie.
One more thing: This movie is classy, but it fails to give you that punch, or drags you with its beauty, or hits you with an emotional upheavel, it leaves you a lil dazed and confused, but it is not exquisite joy. The sets are beautiful, but the thread breaks, somewhere.
You rather spend the money on Umrao Jaan or Parineeta or better still, a buffet dinner, yes that will be worth it!
