Gautham Menon revolutionised the Tamil film industry with this adrenalin pumping crime drama that made him join the elite panel of directors.

A group of sincere police officers lead by Anbu Selvan (Surya) are assigned by the Commissioner of police to eradicate gangsters plaguing the city. The group is nicknamed ‘Untouchables’ for their daring encounters aided by Sreekanth (Balaji), Arul (Vivek) and Ilamaran (Sethu). Anbu Selvan is a loner who strongly believes that a family is a burden and liability for someone like him whose life is constantly on threat. But life changes when he meets Maya (Jothika), a charming schoolteacher who after brief encounters with Anbu, confesses her love for him, but is turned down. With the sudden entry of Pandia (Jeevan), a cold-blooded sadistic killer who specialises in ransom and extortion.

The city is rattled with atrocious crimes. Anbu Selvan and his gang get the nod to execute Sethu, one of the most terrorizing gangsters in the city, and shoot him down in an encounter. But what they don’t realise is that Pandia is the brother of Sethu. And he vows to take revenge on Anbu Selvan and his gang. Hoping the worst is over Anbu Selvan confesses his love to Maya and decides to marry her, just as Pandia embarks on his mission. As he goes on a killing spree, life turns topsy-turvy for the quartet, especially when he abducts Maya, now the wife of Anbu and throws out an open challenge. What follows is adrenalin pumping cat and mouse chase, following Anbu Selvan’s trials and turbulences to save Maya.

Gautham Mennon had conceived the idea for the film after reading an article about Encounter Cops in Time magazine.

The director initially wanted to cast Madhavan for the pivoted role, but was turned down. It was Jyothika who convinced the director to approach Surya.

Surya won accolades of critical praise for his portrayal of a cop, which he donned for the first time, and also a revelation of his acting skills that put him to stardom.

Jyotika transcends to a new level in her career with an alluring performance, which until then was stereotypical.

The Commissioner of Chennai hosted a tea party to the crew of the film, as he was greatly impressed by the way Gautham Mennon had handled the subject.

The film is complemented with an exhilarating background score from Harris Jeyaraj, which also played a key role in the film’s success.

With it’s racy editing, thumping musical score, and brilliant performances, Kaakha Kaakha is an honest and brave attempt on the lives of police officers.
