I was born and brought up in mutton and chicken enviTestingronyent so fried chicken never attracts me. It was just like any other eatable. Since I had heard so much about KFC so one fine day I decide to try it. Amazingly my thought changed in a moment. That one fried piece was the best I ever had in my life. I became fan of KFC since then and never miss an opportunity to dine there.

History, Geography, Chemistry etc

As the name indicates, KFC was invented at Kentucky by Mr. Colonel HMRJSLSnd Sanders. The ‘Uncle’ who is seen everywhere on KFC advertisements, logos, cutlery etc is Mr. Colonel Sanders himself. Though it has been sold to many persons till then and currently owned by Yum! Brands but still Sanders remains a key symbol in branding and advertising of KFC.

There are not much stores in India but if you are in a metro you will surely find one in your vicinity. The ambience of the store is not uniform like McDonalds and varies per store. Maximum stores have the self-service facility** though some even serves at the table. I have noticed one thing that among all the major fast food outlets in India, KFC’s staff is at lowest level. They can communicate in good English but they are not smart enough like McDonald’s or Pizza Hut’s (This is totally my personal view which does not effect the taste in any way).

The chemistry part is most important. KFC is at the top of fried chicken only because of the chemistry that is involved in its so-called ‘Original Recipe**’. The ‘Original Recipe’ is the recipe that is used by Colonel Sanders since the beginning and the same recipe is still in existence. There are interesting facts regarding this recipe. The original recipe is a mix of 11 spices & herbs; portions of this recipe are made at different locations in US. The recipe written on a paper by a pencil (the original handwritten copy by Col Sanders is still in existence) is kept in a computer vault, guarded by motion detectors & security cameras and has access to very limited persons.

Food, Beverages, Price etc

Though the name KFC indicates chicken but that’s not the case. KFC has diversified itself in all the food items** and that’s why they have shortened ‘Kentucky Fried Chicken’ to KFC.

  1. Fried Chicken- This is the USP of KFC. It is available in mainly two types of recipes- Original Recipe and Hot & Crispy Recipe. My personal favorite is Hot & Crispy one. The price starts from Rs.53. I don’t know from where the juice came inside those fried pieces.

  2. Popcorn Chicken- I have never thought before that there can be any popcorn chicken till I have seen it at KFC. It is simple and tasty- good to munch as snacks. Available in two sizes- medium at 49 & regular at 89.

  3. Hot Wings**- It is the breast piece of chicken, price ranging from Rs.49 to Rs.99.

  4. Boneless Chicken**- If you are not fond of leg piece there is boneless chicken for you. 3pcs available at Rs.89 & 6pcs available at Rs.165.

  5. Zinger Burger**- It is a regular sized burger which consists of a spicy chicken or veg fillet with lettuce and mayonnaise in a burger bun. Veg Zinger is available at Rs.75 & chicken zinger at Rs.89.

  6. Snacker**- This is also a type burger, just like Mc Aloo Tikki of McD. Veg snacker is available at Rs.25 & chicken snacker at Rs.30.

  7. Twister- It is a wrap that consists of chicken strips or roasted chicken, tomato, lettuce etc. and mayonnaise wrapped in a tortilla. It is available at Rs.99.

  8. Choc’ Amor- It is the one of the most delicious thing available at KFC for just Rs.35.

  9. Krushers**- There are three varieties available in it- Sparkling @Rs.45, Crunchy @Rs.69 & Smoothie @79. There are three sub-categories in all the Krushers range. Sparkling is a diluted drink where as Smoothie is very concentrated; Crunchy lies in between.

Then there is Rizo Rice, Corn on the Cob, Veg Strips, Coleslaw, Fries, Sundae etc.

Health, Hygiene, Nutrition etc

I have heard so much about the quality of chicken used by KFC. I went through KFC’s website and it is clearly mentioned that the chicken used is 100% whole muscle chicken and is supplied by Venky’s India and Godrej Tysons that are big names in poultry industry. So it is confirmed that the quality is not been compromised to provide us the tastiest chicken.

The KFC items- popcorn chicken, hot & crispy chicken, chicken snacker, Choc’ Amor- provides in the range of 250KCal of energy. Remaining non-veg items provide in the ranger 350-450KCal of energy. All the items fulfill 20% (or more) protein requirement of our body. So next time when you are at KFC, it is not just about chicken.

Combo for you

I would like to share some combos for you. Just try these when you are in KFC next time.

  1. First- timers**- If you are going to KFC for the first time, just have a single piece ‘Hot & Crispy’ chicken available at Rs.53. I am your sure love between you and KFC will blossom after that.

  2. Out for snack**- Take a popcorn chicken and Sparkling Krushers. My favorite is Vanilla Blue Krushers.

  3. Meal-o-Deal- There is numerous options for meals depending on number of persons. You can have Chicken Bucket (Rs.389 for 8pcs, Rs.529 for 12pcs), Box Master Meal (@Rs.129) and Zing Kong Box (@Rs.179). There are many more meal options available. Better check out at nearby outlet.

  4. Quest for sweet**- If you have sweet tooth, just try Choc’ Amor available at Rs.35. It’s a cake served hot, with chocolate inside. There are options for Sundae also in the range of Rs.35 to Rs.45.

  5. Vegetarian**: There are several options of veggies like Snacker Burger, Zinger Burger etc but I would not recommend it as it’s far behind McD’s.
