Kerala-God’s Own country

It was Kashmir before.Somebody had said that it is paradise on earth. Kerala is paradise of south India. It has the best natural beauty. The combination of hill stations, beaches, water resorts and reasonably good commercial hubs makes it best tourist destination.

I have visited Kerala three times on my vacations & I have found major changes in all the three trips. When I visited Kerala for the first time it was raw in service and beauty was virgin. The traveling in the remote areas was difficult and there were hardly good hotels to stay. You can only stay in a city/town of a nearby tourist place and visit the surrounding areas. The food was cheap and good. The local residents were also not ready to manage or handle tourists.

On my second visit two years back I saw total transition from the first visit. The best locations were really developed well with the best hotels. The roads were excellent and the main business was all around tourists. The people were still friendly for tourists and had not still understood the scope of tourist business. The language is a big barrier as no body understands any other language than Malayalam.

This Diwali I went again to Kerala. I could see the total transition. I had gone on the northern part of Kerala around Calicut area. The beauty landscaping changes but beauty is same every where from south Kerala to north Kerala. From Trivandrum’s beach beauty and coconuts to Cochin’s Tea estates and spices and further north to Coffee plantations it is all very beautiful. With light drizzle shower it makes it more pretty. The resorts are getting better and better. More and varied options are available. Exorbitantly priced resorts to home stays are available in plenty. Population on roadside is same. All the areas are thickly populated. The signages on the road side are hardly visible and if found are in local language only. The people are not eager to show the road and help in any regards. We found most of the houses closed, may have shifted to other parts of the country and gulf for work.Only senior citizens were visible. The resorts/hotels have become very commercial.Preferential treatment for the `Firangis’(It is very much there in Rajasthan and Goa). The resorts try to cut corners buy saving on small things.Instead of hospitality they run it mechanically. Ideally if you go to Matheran, and visit Regal or Rugby you will find people more than happy to talk, share experiences and even will take suggestions for food. The worst was during the trip in house boat during night, our boat was raided by thief but fortunately due to wooden flooring we could hear the noise & got up and theft ran away. This was the least expected in Kerala and in house boat.

Overall I feel the `God’s own country’ is truly God’s own country-Paradise if you consider for beauty but people are still not geared up for the boom they are seeing due to the tourist rush. It is surely a place to visit and I will say earlier the better. Before Munnar becomes Ooty or any commercial hill station be there.
