The Plot

The film starts of on a stormy night with Urmila Matondkar playing a nameless character. The audience learns that she is home alone as she is on the phone to her mother who is out at a party with her father. She keeps telling her mother to hurry up and return home when suddenly the news reporter on the TV reveals that a killer on the loose is out murdering young girls home alone. That adds to her creeps.

Still filled with fear she begins to eat a sandwich when the doorbell is rung. At that moment panic overstrikes her as her thoughts go back to TV report. Nevertheless, she opens the door and there stands a nameless man (Manoj Bajpai) asking to meet, ‘Mr Malhotra.’ She tells him no, ‘Mr Malhotra,’ lives at the house but he insists that Mr Malhotra gave him the address. After a lot of arguing she finally gets rid of him… well she thinks so.

It’s raining hard and he returns to ask her shelter. The girl disagrees and in panic she lies that her husband is asleep upstairs and he will get angry. The stranger insists on meeting her husband and asking him but she says no. He turns up by the window as she is making a sandwich in the kitchen. He asks for a sandwich, as he is hungry. Giving in to him, the girl makes him one and slides it to him through the window.

The background sounds produced by Sandeep Chowta add to the suspense and tension of the film. The girl is scared and the stranger persuades her to let him in. He sits by the TV and does not stop talking. He reveals his hatred for cats and then kicks her cat. His presence makes her feel a little more comfortable and secure since he is a man and will save her from danger. She lets it slip that she lied that her husband was asleep upstairs and that she is not even married and is in the house alone.

The tension rises as the light go out and the girl goes into the kitchen to get some candles to find her cat dead. The first thing that comes to her head is that the man must be the murderer and she is scared to death to face him. She runs towards the front door after he fails to stop her and there on the footstep stands another man. He claims to her a police officer so the first stranger asks him for proof. But is he?

The Performances Of The Main Characters

Urmila proves that she is fit to play this character as she performs very well. Her innocent face allows the audience to see in her fear. She acts very naturally and interests the viewer futher.

Manoj performs his role very well as his tricks the audience with his evil expressions. His nameless character lets the viewer wonder who he is and whether or not he is the murderer and why he is demanding to see ‘Mr Malhotra.’ He raises the suspense and is caught at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Director

This was the first film of Ram Gopal Verma that I had seen and I was very impressed. He clutches onto the audience throughout the film and delivers a great climax and a super-shocking ending. The audience does not get what they expect. He has proved that he can direct horror movies, as the film runs at a medium pace interesting the viewer. It is also a short film about 2 hours long, which does not drag on. It is short and to the point. This film does not have any love stories or music performed by the main characters but just background music that adds the horror. Three characters, Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpai and Sushant Singh, perform the story. The scene is also set in a big house claiming to be the girls. There is no exotic scenery, just the house, night, rain and fear. It is just a straight super-hit thriller!
