The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.
But not everybody is up for it and then there follows deadly game of avoiding and chasing death!
So this movie is about about mystifying and terrifying and death...Mystery has its own beauty of unfolding.
We always love this suspense in books and novels and screening experience is more pleasure because then you dont need to visualize.
But..it should be good one and to me KAUN is..
Its no-nonsense bollywood masala ..just pure cinematic experience for enjoyment.
Plot :
It is a foggy, rainy day and Miss Malhotra (Urmila) is all alone in her home.
She hears about a serial killer roaming freely in the city on television. Being alone in such situation and entire environment to go with, She gets frightened now...
And..Knock, knock! ..
One stranger Sameer (Manoj Bajpayee) is trying to enter her home by saying that he has been called on that address for business matters.
Miss Malhotra denies opening door as it is not the address he is looking for. But somehow Sameer manages to enter home. Miss Malhotra must not trust Sameer as he could be that serial killer. Things are becoming confusing between them as time lapses.
Right at that time Inspector Qureshi (Sushant Singh) enters home offering help to Miss Malhotra as he smells something suspicious from outside.
But.. he is not in police uniform and doesn't even have his police id. Is he really an inspector?
Now, who should Miss Malhotra trust? Where these deadlock end?
Well that's where terrifying truth ''lies''...well keep eyes fixed on...
Screenplay Development
Is Most amazing part of the movie for me (Because I am undergraduate in watching movies so my movie knowledge is as good as QAZI''S singing abilities).
Its very strong point because mystery is within 3 characters only, that is stand out because generally in bollywood suspense thriller, there is entire buffet (rather bluff (et)) of is dished out in front of you… Pick one of 100's and keep guessing...here nothing like it.
Plot develops character wise.
For First half an hour, it's URMILA all over the screen...with her cat. Then with silence of thief's walk, MANOJ VAJPAYEE enters into script. And with entry of Sushant singh, script gets more and more twister and ends up with round the twist end.
Entire script develops at one place (Where URMILA stays) and entire story or event takes place in 3-4 hours itself.
So no usual stuff like any love struck or dream song sequences neither any black magic visible which so much related with bollywood horror flicks.
Characters :
Urmila :
She is at her best. Make no mistake it was her first such performance before all those typecast role she followed.
From normal home alone to getting to know that news and then get caught in queer situation with these both characters...her life gets miserable at those hours.
To say the least, she is like any one of us, caught in that situation, whole movie we watch through hers frame.
Manoj Vajpayee
I have no doubt that this must be one of his own favorite role...Stylish yet insane look...Sort of annoying character with flavor of suspicion.
His role and performance just adds deep colors to whole drama.
Sushant singh
He plays underplay yet blunt at the same time. As a last entry of three, has lesser footage but still good job done. No loopholes.
My feel:
Best thing happened to me regarding this film that I went with complete blank mind to watch it. I didn't know anything about movie as we had just finished exams and we were straight off to big screen ,neither I did watch any promo so it did help like I didn't have any preconceived notion.
Stand Out
Treatment.
No normal bollywood ishtyle. No gana,no bajana,no pyar,no ashique,no diwana nothing.
Also no beaten path ramsay style. Khoon, badla, black magic, bhooth nothing of this either.
So its flash of brilliance from RGV for me ..trailblazer in some way.
Background score
It was of the first ''water''.
It was by SANDEEP CHOWTA.
I learnt that RGV spent half of the budget on this itself and it surely visible. Its loud!
It was drenched for quench of plot.
To sum up it in best way, that foggy, cloudy atmosphere with constant lightening and rain is itself 4th character of the movie.
LOCATION
Its very important when you are going to keep it for entire length.
It was shot at PANVEL and it went exceedingly well with rain and fog.
FINAL COMMENTS
It is surely one of the rarest of normal bollywood breed.
RGV did this movie from nowhere and as spontaneously as now writes review here.
It was shot in one go and one month.
I think it was after being dormant for while, if I am not wrong after DAUD.
This remains one of my favorites of this kind (Horror) of bollywood lot.
Never mind (so called) critics, they will come up with saying that this is inspired from some past flick etc etc ,and comparisons.
Remedy: Remember the great (?!) khalid mohammad and forget and forgive them.
ONLY MISTAKE
RGV and Co did is promotion.
Product is no better without promotion.
I have read that movie didn't run as well as it should have because of lack of publicity...Was it deliberate attempt (To conceal everything) or marketing mistake is buried and bygone.
LAST WORD:
Well, as I experienced, it's never good that to know too much about suspense if you want to enjoy it. So I stop here.
All and all its all about art basic, pleasure and enjoyment.
No social message(with hot rainy song) and rest of nonsense we all know..
For a change, hypocrisy is non existent which is so relevant with bollywood and no-nonsense is ''prevailed'' here.
So Make sure you watch it with loud sound system or home theater to say the least.
Just sit with total blank mind and enjoy.
