It's Valentine's day. A different love story of sorts, thought I should share it with all of u. This is something we rarely witness in a Tamil film, emotional quotient. and by emotions i don't mean there regulars like mother, sister etc etc sentiments. Katrathu Tamil really touches you on all levels. Kudos to director Ram.
Prabhakar(Jeeva) narrates his story to a cameraman(Karunas), His story has both socio-economic relevance and his own personal highs and lows. His childhood sweetheart, his college, his work, his incapability to understand the prevailing economic situations around him, his innocence, his transformations into a psychotic loner to a killer and back to a human.. One hell of a ride!!! Intense.
The movie is laced with references like ' nejamma thaan solluriya?' - so poetic used a number of times in the film but every time is brilliant. Brilliant to say the least and I am not a poet but still appreciate the depth of the scene. Once in a Blue moon.. I would associate that phrase with this one..A numerous scenes stand out in them movie, i'll have to nearly write out the entire screenplay for that.
Casting: Jeeva. The lifeline of this movie. Expressive eyes, a sober yet strangely enjoyable baritone. He conveys the frustration, innocence, innocence, animosity and a million more emotions all at ease..you do feel bad for the character and his incomplete love story..his best performance till date..hope to see more of him. Anjali is expressive and cute. Karunas as usual is himself -funny. The rest of the cast is effective in their respective parts. The child artists look confident as well.
Music - Yuvan Shankar Raja has done a commendable job keeping in mind the sensitivities of the subject at hand. Background score also deserves a special mention. Cinematography, Art Direction are top notch, the rustic locales of Maharshtra, the buzzing Chennai all captured well on screen.
Director Ram, any compliment I give him is not enough. Such a delicate subject with so many layers can go terribly wrong if handled by someone else. He raises a rarely addressed issue with elan. It really is makes us wonder.Narration style is unique as well.
Great work, Mr Ram.
