In those days, Kashmir wasn't a headache on the forehead of the globe, but a Paradise On Earth. It was in 1964 that Kashmir Ki Kali (K3) hit the cinemas as a salad of music, romance and drama; garnished with fresh sprigs of the Kashmiri locale.

The stage

It was a package deal. A musical that offered a trip to Srinagar on a couch. The era of colour had brought a sort of vibrancy into movies. Outdoors and their natural colours turned into a rage. The white of snow was much beautiful in a color movie than grey and grey movies. So K3 was a treat to the moviegoers with its beautiful Kashmiri locations. The movie starred the enduring star of the era, Shammi Kapoor. His penchant for working with new faces saw another bonus for moviedom while glamour attained a new spelling in this movie: Sharmila Tagore. The third great force often regarded, as THE force of the movie was Mohammed Rafi. Due credit should be given to OP Nayyar who composed 52 great tunes for the movie out of which Shakti Samantha chose nine and then wrote the script and made the movie! The magic of Rafi, Nayyar and Shammi worked well. The movie still remains fresh in our minds. The movie also starred the prolific villain, Pran, with yet another set of bad-man mannerisms (remember how he smoked his cigarette in the movie?).

The story

The usual set of incidents. Rich and eligible bachelor goes on a vacation-cum-work trip to Srinagar, Kashmir and it's love at first sight with a local beauty selling fresh flowers. The usual romantics, songs, comedy with Rajendranath and tiffs with Pran (who wanna marry Ms. Flowers take place. Mommy dear disapproves rich sonny's fling with a lowly flower-girl. The story meanders through a past when it is revealed that the lovers' parents are mixed up. The rich guy is the poor man's son while the pretty li'l Miss Flowz is pretty much the rich mama's daughter. The estranged parents re-unite with respective offspring and solemnize their marriage. Pran then predictably plays spoilsport only to be pulverized by a rejuvenated Shammi. End of story.

The USP

Forget the story. In those days, outdoors were hardly seen in movies and were not as inspiring as the pristine atolls of New Zealand in 'Kaho Na Pyar Hai'. It was Junglee starring Shammi and yet another new-face then, Saira Banu, that broke the ice. K3 was an extended camp for Shammi in Kashmir who, by now, called Kashmir as home! Kashmir in its Old Glory is certainly a USP if the movie were to be seen today. The magic of Mohd. Rafi and OP Nayyar in both, foot-tapping and waltzing tunes is another USP. Deewana hua baadal,’ ‘Isharon isharon mein,’ ‘Subhan Allah,’ ‘Taarif Karoon Kya,’ ‘Hai duniya ussiki,’ ‘Kisi na kisise’ and Yeh mere haath mein are some of the golden oldies that can be enjoyed in this movie. Shammi's was at his best with his no-hang-ups style of moving/ dancing. USP again. Check his dancing movements in the song 'Taarif Karoon Kya'. Rafi sings ‘Taarif’ each time in a different way and Shammi dances differently each time to match Rafi). The final USP is Sharmila Tagore. Catch her in the first foray into movies. Decked in ethnic Kashmiri outfits and sporting cute dimples, so pretty was she then, that her immature acting and accented Hindi were over-looked.

Ratings

How about a star for Shammi and a star for Sharmila? A star for the wonderful Kashmiri locales. A star for great music from Mohd Rafi and Nayyar. A star for the age. The age of sixties, the golden era. 4 stars
